YORBA LINDA, Calif. — The UC Davis women's golf team posted the field's best round of the day, firing a collective 2-under 286 to move into third place overall and stand just four shots back of the leader following Tuesday's second round at the 2021 Big West Conference Women's Golf Championships at the Yorba Linda Country Club in Yorba Linda, Calif.
The Aggies jumped one spot in the overall standings after entering the day in fourth place, picking up two two strokes as the field inched back toward them. Tuesday's 286 is the team's lowest round since shooting a 286 in the second round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic on March 23 en route to a team title.
At 5-over following 36 holes, UC Davis trails day two leader UC Irvine, which shot a 7-over 295 on Tuesday after entering the day at 6-under, and is just three shots back of second-place Cal Poly, which finished with a 6-over 294 after entering the round at 4-under after Monday's opening round.
Senior
Hannah Sun spearheaded the Aggies' day two rally, firing a second-round 70 to stand at 2-under for the day and 1-under for the tournament. She enters Wednesday's final round in a tie for third — a jump of 10 spots on the leader board after her day one finish — five shots off the pace of individual leader Megan Yang of UC Irvine, who was 1-over on the day and stands at 6-under for the tournament.
After opening with a bogey on the first hole, Sun powered her way to birdies on the sixth, eighth, and ninth holes, before playing the back nine at even-par for the day en route to her 70 — her first round under par this season and just one off her collegiate low of 69 set during the second round of the Westbrook Spring Invitational back in 2019.
With her four birdies during Monday's first round, Sun ranks tied for third among the field with seven through the first two rounds.
Junior
Andrea Gomez Lloret also helped power the Aggies' charge, improving on her first round performance by five shots thanks to a 2-under-70 on Tuesday, moving up 16 spots on the leader board into a tie for fifth at 1-over heading into the final round. Gomez Lloret finished the front nine even thanks to a birdie on the seventh, then drained three birdies on the back nine en route to her career-low round, besting her previous low of 71 set in the opening round of the Gunrock Invitational to kick off this season.
Senior
Madison Wood recovered from a 3-over 38 on the front nine, to finish at even par for the day thanks to four birdies on the back nine. At 3-over for the tournament, Wood jumped nine spots into a tie for 12th, standing just one shot back of teammate
Jackie Lucena, who is in a tie for eighth at 2-over following a 74 on Tuesday.
Senior
Skyler Wood wrapped up her second round by jumping two spots into a tie for 35th, rounding out the Aggies' scoring group.
The final round of the Big West Championships begins on Wednesday morning (April 21) at 7:30 a.m., with the Aggies going off the first tee beginning at 8:20 a.m. Live scoring is available via GolfStat here: http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=21614
