2021 MGOLF Thomas Hutchison at Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic

Men's Golf Jason Spencer, Assistant Director

Hutchison in the top 20 after day one

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — UC Davis returning junior Thomas Hutchison finished with a 1-under 71 to claim a spot in the top 20, helping the Aggies' men's golf team to a tie for 11th following the first round of the 2021 Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on Monday at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif.

As a team, UC Davis shot an opening round 294 to stand tied with Denver just outside the top 10, standing five shots back of Colorado State, Kansas, and New Mexico for eighth, and 11 shots back of the University of San Diego at 5-under, which holds a two-shot lead over USC.

After a rough front nine that saw him stand at 3-over after five holes, Hutchison found his composure and began his charge up the leaderboard. A birdie on the seventh left him at 2-over after nine and he was even until striking for an eagle on the par-5 14th to bring him even. He followed that with a birdie on the 15th to inch under par for the round.

Returning freshman Lucas Carper finished his first day at even par and a tie for 27th, finishing the back nine at 1-under thanks to back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes, while newcomer Alejandro Nava opened his round with a two on the par-4 first hole and was 3-under after three before finishing his day with a 2-over 74 and a tie for 49th.

Returning freshman Jacob Westberg, who finished with a 5-over 77, and classmate Mark Stephens, who shot a 6-over 78, rounded out the scoring group.

All are chasing Nevada's Sam Harned, who closed out his first round with a 5-under 67 to hold a one shot lead over four different players after the first 18 holes.

Play continues with the second round on Tuesday (March 9) at 7:10 a.m., with the Aggies going off the 10th hole along with players from Air Force, Nebraska, and Northern Illinois. Live scoring is available via GolfStat at http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=22005.
