LOWELL, Mass. — UC Davis' defense shined throughout all four quarters and both overtime periods of Tuesday's America East contest at Cushing Field in Lowell, Massachusetts, which led to the Aggies' inaugural shootout of the 2021 spring season.
Milou Korthouwer found the back of the cage for UC Davis, but the River Hawks broke a 1-1 tie for good in the final round of that shootout to escape with a 1-0 victory.
The Aggies will now head to UAlbany for the last of their three-game East Coast road trip, and enter Thursday's 7 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. ET matchup with a 1-3 overall record. UMass Lowell will continue its season at 4-2.
"It hurts to lose when we came in and executed our game plan all across the field," said Emily Chen. "I'm proud of our command of the game and the work we put in, but we just really have to finish."
Tuesday's result was an unlucky one for the Aggies since they controlled the pace of play throughout most of the afternoon, created more scoring opportunities compared to their opponents, and enjoyed a stellar performance on defense throughout all 80 minutes of action.
Not only did UC Davis out-shoot UMass Lowell, 15-12, they also recorded nearly twice as many shots on goal (7-4) and eight of nine penalty corners taken throughout the game.
Led by Madison Theodore with three, nine different Aggies recorded a shot; Korthouwer led her team with two shots on goal.
Out of the 12 shots faced, Aggie goalkeeper Kalli Wagnon finished with four saves.
UC Davis will wrap-up the first of two East Coast road trips on Thursday when it faces the Great Danes, fans can watch the action from Alumni Turf by clicking here.
