ALBANY, N.Y. — Shea Gavin scored the first and final goals of the day when UC Davis faced UAlbany Thursday morning at Alumni Turf, but goals scored by the Great Danes in the first, second and final quarters allowed them to edge the Aggies and record a 3-2 victory.
Including Thursday's game, half of Gavin's eight shots recorded this season were on goal; of those four, a team-high two found the back of the cage.
UC Davis will return home following its three-game East Coast road trip with a 1-4 overall and 0-3 record against America East teams, UAlbany will continue its season at 3-1 and 2-0.
"I am so proud of how the team played," said senior midfielder
Madison Theodore. "We followed the game plan, peppered the keeper, and put a couple in. Unfortunately they edged us out by a goal.
"I am also proud of how we fought until the final horn sounded, now it's time to take care of business back on the West Coast."
The Aggies wasted no time in scoring the first goal of the game when the first of Gavin's team-high two swings found the back of the cage three minutes and three seconds after the game started.
After tying the game at 1-1 two minutes after the Aggies took an early lead, the Great Danes broke that tie midway through the second quarter and took a 2-1 lead at halftime. That score remained untouched throughout a back-and-forth battle in the third quarter until UAlbany doubled its lead to a 3-1 margin with just under seven minutes left to play in the game.
Undaunted, the Aggies continued to attack the Great Danes' cage until Gavin punched in her second goal of the game, on a cross from
Brooke Sanchez, pulling her team within one with just under two minutes remaining — enough time for the UC Davis to score the equalizer and force overtime for the second time in as many games.
Unfortunately for the Aggies, they simply ran out of time as UAlbany was able to withstand that late charge by running out the clock to secure a win in its first home game of the year.
Gavin, Theodore and Sanchez each led UC Davis with two shots and were among a group of five Aggies who recorded an attempt on goal. Shots taken by
Jordan Engdahl and
Siena Dwyer were also on goal.
Once field hockey returns to Northern California, it will continue a five-game road swing when it heads to Stanford for Monday night's 6 p.m. Since the designated America East matchup between the Aggies and Cardinal will take place on April 9 at Aggie Field Hockey Facility, this is a non-conference game involving two league teams, as was the case with the team's home-and-home season-opening series vs. Cal.
