OPENING TIP
Last time out, the Aggies posted a season-low in points allowed and a near season-high in points scored in an 81-40 win over UC Merced on Dec. 4. The Aggies had four players score in double-figures for the first time this season with
Elijah Pepper,
Leo DeBruhl and
Kane Milling scoring 11 each and
Christian Anigwe leading with 14.
11 of the 12 Aggies to see the court against UC Merced scored at least two points in the win.
UC Davis never trailed as they allowed just one Bobcat to score in double-figures and held UC Merced to 29.8 percent shooting from the field for the game.
Pepper has now scored in double-figures in six of UC Davis' seven games and leads the Aggies in scoring at 15.4 per game.
The Aggies are in the final stretches of preperation for conference play with just three games remaining on their non-conference schedule. Following Tuesday's game at Oregon State, UC Davis will travel to Pacific on Dec. 19 and host Portland on Dec. 22 before hosting its first Big West game of the season on Dec. 28 against UC Riverside.
SERIES HISTORY
Oregon State and UC Davis will be facing off for just the second time in program history. The lone matchup came on Dec. 7, 2007 in Corvallis with the Beavers winning 73-59.
The Aggies were led by 11 points from Vince Oliver and Kyle Brucculeri that day.
Series Record vs. Oregon State:
Oregon State leads 1-0
Last Oregon State win: 12/7/07, H - W, 73-59
Last UC Davis win: N/A
Series Streak: Oregon State +1
PEPPER HEATS UP
Elijah Pepper became one of just two Big West players to score 30 points or more on Dec. 1. Following that night's games, he was fourth in the conference in scoring at 16.2 per game. His six made threes against Pacific are tied for the most in a single game in the Big West this season.
DOUBLE HEADERS
Since the Aggies began playing double header game days featuring both the men's and women's teams in 2007, the UC Davis men sport a 23-13 record in those instances.
Following Dec. 4's double header win, the men are 4-0 over the last three double-header days, including a 110-98 win over CSUN on Feb. 15, 2020 that set a Division 1-era program record for scoring.
IMPROVEMENT ON THE GLASS
Dec. 1's win marked the first time this season UC Davis has won the rebounding battle, outworking Pacific on the glass 34-24. More importantly, the Aggies pulled down eight offensive rebounds that led to seven second chance points compared to four offensive boards and two second chance points for Pacific.
UC Davis went on to outrebound UC Merced 37-21 on Dec. 4 and are averaging a plus-13 rebounding advantage over their last two games.
A SEASON OF FIRSTS
With the Aggies' non-conference schedule quickly winding down, it's also been a preseason of firsts for UC Davis in terms of their opponents.
The Aggies started the season with an exhibition at William Jessup in Rocklin, Calif., the first NCAA Division I team to visit the NAIA school's campus due to the teams playing for charity to benefit the Red Cross and Dixie fire victims.
Two games later, UC Davis played Pepperdine for the first time in school history. After Sunday against Academy of Art, the Aggies will also see UC Merced for the first time ever on Dec. 4.
On Dec. 14, UC Davis will travel to Oregon State for just the second meeting all-time with the Beavers.
STUDYING UP
UC Davis will be trying to buck a Division I-era trend when it comes to games played after finals week.
Excluding the 2020-21 season when games in December were canceled due to the pandemic, the Aggies are 4-9 over the last 13 seasons in games played after the layoff for exams.
The Aggies last won in their first game after that week on Dec. 16, 2021 in an 83-65 win over William Jessup.
OREGON STATE AT A GLANCE
The Beavers enter Tuesday's contest at 1-8 with almost the exact same layoff as the Aggies having not played since Dec. 5.
Oregon State is already two games into their conference schedule having fallen to Cal 61-73 and Arizona 65-90. They won their season-opener against Portland State 73-64 on Nov. 9 but have dropped eight straight since. Three of those losses have come by three points or less with one in overtime.
The Beavers are led by Warith Alatsishe averaging 12.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and Jarod Lucas' 10.2 points per game. Alatishe and Lucas are also the only Beavers to start all nine of Oregon State's games this season.
Oregon State is averaging just 29.8 points in the first half this season and have been outscored 330-268 in first halves. In contrast, UC Davis is outscoring opponents 239-222 and averaging 34.1 points in first halves through seven games.
