FRESNO, Calif. -- Junior
Levi Murtaugh finished with four goals and two assists for six points, while
Connor Norton and
Michael Plastino each added five points on the day, helping the No. 8 UC Davis men's water polo team to a 21-6 rout of host Fresno Pacific in Western Water Polo Association play on Saturday afternoon at the Sunnyside Aquatics Complex in Fresno, Calif.
The Aggies improved to 12-5 overall with their fourth consecutive victory and remained unbeaten in conference play at 4-0. The Sunbirds fell to 5-14 overall and 2-2 in league, getting two goals apiece from three different players.
UC Davis topped the 20-goal plateau for the third time this season, leading 10-1 at the half before scoring 11 more times in the second half.
Plastino opened the scoring at the 6:16 mark and scored twice during a 5-0 run to start the game for the Aggies, as Norton,
Aleix Aznar Beltran, and Norton, also found the back of the cage. The Sunbirds scored with 10 seconds remaining in the first period to stop the bleeding, but only briefly, as UC Davis scored the only five goals of the second quarter en route to its halftime advantage.
The Aggies scored seven goals in a high-scoring third quarter and edged out Fresno Pacific, 4-3, in the fourth en route to the victory.
UC Davis outshot the Sunbirds, 37-23, shooting just under 57 percent for the match while holding FPU to just 26 percent. Defensively, the Aggies collected 19 steals while
Aaron Wilson (six saves) and
Duncan Creed (two saves) split time in net.
A busy road week comes to an end in the Bay Area on Sunday (Oct. 17) at 1 p.m., taking on No. 4 Stanford.
