DAVIS, Calif. — In off-and-on rainy conditions, No. 18 UC Davis fell to No. 5 UC Irvine, 14-8 at the Schaal Aquatics Center on Saturday, Mar. 7.
After the Big West opener for both teams, the Aggies are 8-12 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while the Anteaters improve to 14-5 overall and 1-0 in league.
The Aggies played an even first quarter, tying the game at 3-3 on goals from Emily Byrne, Alyssa Lengtat, and Noelle Wijnbelt. UC Irvine opened the game in the second period, taking a 6-3 lead before Allyson Clague picked up her first goal of the day at 0:31 remaining in the half.
Byrne recorded her second goal to start the third period to be the lone goal in the quarter, as UC Irvine put up four unanswered goals to extend the lead to 11-5 heading into the final eight minutes. The Aggies again played a close quarter in the fourth, seeing a goal from Clague and a pair from Chloe Robinson, but were unable to overcome the deficit.
UC Irvine was led by Toni Shackelford with a double hat trick, and Morgan Jones earning five saves.
The Aggies will have the next two weekends off, returning to action at Sonoma State on Mar. 24 at 1 PM.
