Big West
DAVIS, Calif. — After opening the week with a resounding 84-75 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, UC Davis will seek a sweep of this week's games, and this year's head-to-head series against the Matadors, when they visit The Pavilion for Saturday's 5 p.m. Big West battle.
With CSUN entering Davis in second place, and the Aggies now tied for fourth alongside the Gauchos following Thursday's game, another victory will help men's basketball continue its climb up the conference standings entering the final weeks of the season.
This matchup also features two of the league's hottest teams since each won three of their last four played.
By splitting last season's series, CSUN's result snapped the Aggies' 11-game head-to-head win streak — a series of results that started on Feb. 6, 2014, on Bob Hamilton Court. Thanks to its Jan. 18 result in Northridge, UC Davis has now won 12 of the last 13 overall against CSUN, six of the last seven hosted at The Matadome, the last five straight at The Pavilion and a quarterfinal round meeting at the 2015 Big West Tournament.
Led by Terrell Gomez, the league's top scorer thanks to his 20.1 points per game average, Lamine Diane's 25.5 ppg figure (which will become the league's top average once he hits the league's minimum for games played to earn an individual ranking), Darius Brown II and Elijah Harkless, who rank No. 18 and No. 19 respectively in scoring at 10.3 and 9.8 points per game, CSUN boasts the league's top offense with its 74.7 team ppg average.
Entering Saturday's matchup, UC Davis ranks No. 3 in both team scoring at 72.5 ppg and team field goal percentage with its .459 clip (CSUN is No. 4 with a .450 FG pct.) and leads the league for another week from three with its .383 percentage — two points higher than a CSUN squad that is shooting .363 from behind the arc.
UC Davis also holds a distinct advantage, compared to CSUN, in two categories: It is ranked No. 2 in the league in three-point defense since opponents are shooting .330; CSUN is last in this category thanks to its .459 percentage. The Ags are also No. 1 at the free throw line (.775 pct.) vs. CSUN's fourth-ranked .421 clip.
Series Record: UC Davis leads 23-20
Last CSUN Win: 3/7/19 — A, 81-76 (OT)
Last UC Davis Win: 1/18/20 — A, 66-62
Series Streak: UC Davis +1
