Big West
DAVIS, Calif. — Just over two months after the 2019-20 season started at Loyola Chicago, UC Davis' pursuit of another Big West Conference championship will begin Thursday night when it hosts UC Riverside in its inaugural conference game of the season. Tipoff on Bob Hamilton Court is set for 7 p.m.
In addition to a live video stream of this Big West opener, Sports 1140 KHTK will carry Scott Marsh's call. An internet audio broadcast is also available through the station's TuneIn Radio channel by searching Sports 1140 KHTK. Live stats and in-game Twitter updates are also available; links for all of these mediums are available on Men's Basketball's Gameday Central at UCDavisAggies.com.
Both UC Davis and UC Riverside will open conference play on a positive note: Following a narrow loss at New Mexico — one of the toughest road environments in the nation — the Aggies bounced back by holding Holy Names to a Division I-era low 41 points in last Friday's non-conference finale.
Do not let UC Davis' overall record fool you since this young team, which includes nine combined freshmen and sophomores on roster, dropped six games by six points or fewer, and had a chance to win each of those contests until respective opponents pulled away in the final moments of each game.
Highlighted by its 60-57 victory at Fresno State, UC Riverside collected 10 non-conference victories for the first time in the program's D-I era.
Throughout their respective non-conference schedules, the Aggies and Highlanders faced three common opponents in Idaho, Sacramento State and Northern Arizona. Both teams defeated the Vandals and fell to the Hornets; UC Davis posted a blowout victory over the Lumberjacks on their home court (and at altitude: 7,000 feet above sea level) while UCR suffered a seven-point loss at home.
Following Thursday's home game, UC Davis is off on Saturday and will return to action next week at Long Beach State and CSUN in a pair of road games broadcasted nationwide on ESPN3.
Series Record: UC Davis leads 37-33
Last UC Riverside Win: 3/9/19 — H, 71-70
Last UC Davis Win: 2/2/19 — A, 84-71
Series Streak: UC Riverside +1
