DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis will return to the road for Saturday's Big West contest when it heads to the islands to face Hawai'i inside the Stan Sheriff Center. Tipoff from Honolulu is set for 9 p.m. PT.
In addition to a video stream available on BigWest.TV, Sports 1140 KHTK will carry Scott Marsh's courtside call over the airwaves and through an internet audio broadcast available on the station's TuneIn Radio channel. After winning three of four matchups against the Rainbow Warriors, UC Davis dropped both games played last season. A victory on Saturday will prevent UH from extending its current overall, and head-to-head win streak to three games after opening its current four-game homestand with wins against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara (the 'Bows were off earlier this week and will end their one-week hiatus against the Ags).
Of UH's 18 games played in 2019-20, 14 took place on its home court thanks to a pair of non-conference tournaments. Of that block of games, the Rainbow Warriors are 11-3 on its own floor. By comparison, Hawai'i is 1-3 outside of Honolulu and will visit The Pavilion for the return match on March 5 — the Aggies' final home game of the year.
As the only major sports team in the state, many opponents have a tough time dealing with UH's home crowd. Experienced gained during UC Davis' visit to The Pit will help negate any home court advantage: Not only did the Aggies play with poise inside one of the loudest college basketball environments in the nation, they had a chance to force OT against the Lobos on their final possession of that game.
Since UC Davis' 71.75 points per game average is slightly higher than Hawai'i's 70.56 average, Saturday's matchup should shape up as another exciting one between these teams. Not only are the Aggies the Big West's No. 1 team from the free throw line (.768 percentage) and three (.365 pct.), their +1.10 turnover margin is the second-highest in the league.
If UC Davis is able to capitalize on their open looks from distance, opportunities at the stripe, force turnovers and protect the ball, UH will see firsthand how dangerous this year's UC Davis roster is... just ask Long Beach State and CSUN.
