Unbeaten Aggies rally for Causeway Cup victory

Matias and Seslar finish with double-doubles as UC Davis wins in four

DAVIS, Calif. — Senior Lauren Matias and junior Jane Seslar each tallied double-doubles, while freshman Demari Webb continued a torrid start to her career, collecting a match-high 15 kills to lead a group of three Aggies in double-digits, helping the UC Davis women's volleyball team remain unbeaten with a, 20-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-14, victory over rival Sacramento State on Tuesday night at The Pavilion.

Despite dropping their first set of the season, the Aggies improved to 4-0 overall on the season — the program's best start since the 2011 squad opened with a 5-0 mark. UC Davis defeated its rival for the second straight season and the first time at home since a 3-0 sweep back in 2013.

Led by 14 kills from Sarah Davis, the Hornets fell to 2-2 overall on the season as Paige Swinney added 18 digs.

Just three days after setting a career high with 13 kills against Pacific in the championship match of the Aggie Invitational, Webb set the bar even higher, finishing with 15 kills and hitting .250 on the night for her third double-digit kill performance of the season.

Building off her MVP performance at the same tournament, sophomore Mahalia White added 14 more kills and hit .296 for the match on Tuesday, while Matias logged her second consecutive double-double, slamming 12 kills to go along with 15 digs and three blocks.

Seslar added 14 digs to go with a career-high 48 assists in the win, while senior Ally Reyes finished with a season-high 19 digs defensively. Junior Josephine Ough was also efficient, hitting .500 (8-0-16) on the night to go with five blocks.

UC Davis opened up a 6-2 lead in the first set before Sacramento State found a groove mid-way through the set, breaking an 11-all tie as Ashtin Olin served the Hornets to five straight points. Sacramento State pushed the lead to by as many as six at 20-14 before closing the set on a roll, scoring four of the final five after the Aggies had closed to within four.

From that point on, UC Davis took control, scoring six of the final seven points and outlasting the Hornets for a 25-19 win in a back-and-forth second set, and opening the third by scoring eight of the first nine points and holding Sacramento State to -.032 hitting (compared to the Aggies' .444 in the set) en route to a 25-11 victory.

Webb was a highlight of the third, serving her team to 12 of its 25 points in the set with a pair of six-point runs.

The decisive fourth also went quick as UC Davis scored six of the first seven to force a Hornet timeout and hit .333 overall to just .107 for the Hornets as the Aggies cruised to victory. Matias collected 10 of her 12 kills in the final two sets.

After opening with its first four matches at home, UC Davis hits the road for the first time this season, heading to Orem, Utah, to compete at the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Wolverine Invitational hosted by Utah Valley.

The Aggies begin tournament playe against Utah on Friday (Sept. 6) at 9 a.m., before taking on the host Wolverines in the nightcap at 6 p.m. UC Davis closes the weekend with a single match on Saturday (Sept. 7) at Noon against Portland State.
