DAVIS, Calif. — Junior
Kyle Reilly, sophomore
Ian Ambidge, and junior
Jack Stafford, each finished with a pair of goals on the day, but top-ranked Stanford jumped out to an early first quarter lead and never looked back en route to a 16-8 victory over No. 7 UC Davis in a top-10 clash on day two of the 2019 Aggie Roundup at Schaal Aquatic Center on campus.
The Aggies fell to 4-3 overall heading into a Sunday doubleheader to close out the tournament, hosting a rematch with No. 8 California before taking on Ottawa University to finish the weekend. The Cardinal, which suffered its first loss of the year to No. 2 UC Santa Barbara prior to traveling to Davis, improved to 6-1 on the season.
Stanford opened up a 5-1 lead after the first eight minutes behind three goals by Ben Hallock, as UC Davis managed to tie up the Cardinal on Ambidge's first goal of the day just under a minute after the Cardinal had taken a 1-0 lead.
Quinn Woodhead made it a 6-1 advantage midway through the second quarter before the Aggies began to claw back. Junior
Keenan Anderson scored at the 3:56 mark and Ambidge and Stafford found the back of the cage to make it a three-goal contest 7-4.
Stanfond then began to inch away as Bennett Williams and Hallock closed out the first half with goals for a 9-4 advantage at the break and, after Stafford converted a
Nir Gross pass to open the third, Hallock scored again to ignite a 5-0 run for the Cardinal that put the game away.
Reilly would score twice two minutes apart and junior
George Kuesis added a goal with five seconds remaining to cap the scoring for the Aggies, but it was too little, too late.
Hallock finished with six goals on nine shots before picking up his third exclusion with 5:22 remaining in the match, while Williams added five more scores on six shots.
Stafford led UC Davis with four shot attempts, while senior
Yurii Hanley and Gross finished with a pair of assists each.
The final day of the 2019 Aggie Roundup begins at 8 a.m. with Santa Clara taking on Whittier. The Aggies' clash with the Golden Bears is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., with their match against the Spirit to follow immediately after.
