Reigning Big West champs release 2019-20 schedule

Eight postseason squads, seven top 150 RPI opponents on deck for Aggies

DAVIS, Calif. — The three-time defending Big West Conference champion UC Davis women's basketball team announced it's schedule for the 2019-20 campaign, a slate that features eight teams that reached the postseason as well as seven opponents that ranked in the top 150 of last year's final RPI.

Season ticket plans for this year's campaign will go on sale beginning Friday, Aug. 23, starting as low as $75 for the 14-game home schedule at The Pavilion. Fans can purchase their seats online at UCDavisAggies.com or by contacting the UC Davis athletic ticket office at (530) 752-AGS1.

Wrapping up their third consecutive Big West regular season title, a conference tournament crown, and the program's second trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament, the Aggies finished 25-7 overall (its third consecutive 20-win campaign) and a school record 15-1 record in league play, winning 16 consecutive games at one point and facing No. 2-seeded Stanford in the first round of the program's third consecutive postseason appearance.

Led by the record-setting senior trio of Morgan Bertsch, Kourtney Eaton, Karley Eaton, UC Davis wrapped up a four-year run that saw the program win 97 games — the fourth-highest total of any four-year period in the history of the program — and won 25 games for the third consecutive year.

UC Davis is scheduled to face a pair of NCAA Tournament teams with Portland State on Nov. 30 and a rematch of last year's first-round clash with long-time rival Stanford on Dec. 28 at Maples Pavilion. The Vikings fell in the opening round to second-seeded Oregon, while the Cardinal advanced all the way to the quarterfinals before falling to Notre Dame.

Women's NIT qualifiers on the Aggies' schedule include Fresno State (Nov. 12), Saint Mary's (Nov. 19), Minnesota (Dec. 15), Pepperdine (Dec. 19), and league rival Hawai'i (Jan. 11 and Feb. 22), while UC Riverside (Jan. 9 and Feb. 29) made the field of the Women's Basketball Invitational. The Waves made the third round of the WNIT, while the Golden Gophers and Gaels each won their first-round match-ups to gain the second round.

Three of UC Davis' foes finished among the top 100 of the RPI: Stanford (No. 4), Saint Mary's (No. 49), and Pepperdine (No. 99), while Fresno State (No. 120), Montana State (No. 148), Portland State (No. 106), and Minnesota (No. 108), fill out the top 150. For comparison, the Aggies wrapped up the 2018-19 campaign ranked No. 72 in the nation according to the final RPI.

Exhibitions against Stanislaus State and Cal State East Bay set the table for the official start of the season, which opens on the road at Montana State in Bozeman on Nov. 8, and continues with a long-overdue clash with Highway 99 rival Fresno State — the first meeting between the two programs — which are separated by only 182 miles — since 1985.

The first official home appearance follows on Nov. 16 as Santa Clara comes to town — the first meeting between those two programs since 2014 and the first at The Pavilion since 2012 — kicking off a run that sees the Aggies play five of their next six at home. Following its can't miss clash with Saint Mary's on Nov. 19 in Moraga, Calif., UC Davis faces four straight at home beginning on Nov. 22 against San Francisco.

This year's edition of the annual Causeway Cup rivalry will be contested in Davis when Sacramento State comes to town on Nov. 26, followed by a post-Thanksgiving feast against Portland State on Nov. 30. A date with Boston University tips-off the month of December on Dec. 5 — the final home appearance for the Aggies in 2019 as they close out the calendar year with games at Northern Arizona (Dec. 8), at Minnesota (Dec. 15), at Pepperdine (Dec. 19), and at Stanford.

A rare New Year's Day game rings in 2020 as UC Davis hosts local rival William Jessup in a matinee at The Pavilion, setting the scene for the start of Big West Conference play, which opens on the road for the sixth consecutive season — and the second straight year — at UC Riverside on Jan. 9. The conference schedule has the men's and women's teams joining forces to host three doubleheaders at The Pavilion: Feb. 1 against UC Santa Barbara, Feb. 15 against UC Irvine, and saluting the seniors prior to tip off on Feb. 29 against UC Riverside.

The 2020 Big West Tournament begins with the first round and quarterfinal contests at the Walter Pyramid on the campus on Long Beach State on March 10-11, before shifting to the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., for the semifinals and championship on March 13-14. The 39th annual NCAA Tournament tips off with the opening round on March 20 at various campus sites across the country.
