DAVIS, Calif. — A pair of incoming freshmen for the UC Davis men's and women's tennis teams put up solid performances at the ITA Summer Circuit event hosted by UC Davis at the Marya Welch Tennis Center over the weekend. Men's tennis' Andrei Volgin walked away with a doubles title and reached the semifinals in the men's blue draw in the singles. On the women's side, Yana Gurevich advanced to the semifinals in both the singles blue draw, and doubles.

Volgin, the blue draw's third seed in singles, posted straight set victories over Micah Erwin (American River College) and Dean Stratakos (Stanford) to face top-seed Ryder Jackson (USC) in the semifinals. Volgin would go on to post the tournament's best result against Jackson, falling 6-3, 6-4, before Jackson eventually claimed the tournament title.

In doubles play, Volgin teamed up with Azusa Pacific's Ethan Smith to comprise the tournament's top seed. The duo did not drop more than four games in any of the four pro-set matches played, and secured the championship with an 8-3 victory over Issa Yoshida (Portland) and Stratakos in the final.

Gurevich, the 2018 Davis ITA women's singles and doubles champion, reached the semifinals in both events in a field that featured tough competition this year. As the third seed in the singles draw, Gurevich advanced with a pair of dominant straight set wins over Maile Brilhante and Jenna DeTurk (Sonoma), before meeting top-seeded Anna Bright (Cal). Bright ended the 2018-19 season ranked T-74th in the Oracle ITA Division I National Rankings, and defeated Gurevich 6-2, 6-1.

Teaming with Dakota Fordham, the pair earned the tournament's fourth seed, and advanced to the semifinals, before falling to Jacqueline O'Neill and Brilhante.
