PLAY BALL!: The UC Davis softball team looks to strengthen its postseason resume for the NCAA selection committee during the final week of the 2019 regular season while, possibly, playing spoiler at the same time. The Aggies head to the islands to take on second-place Hawai'i in a three-game series beginning Thursday (May 9) with a doubleheader at 8 p.m. PT, followed by a single game on Friday (May 10) at 10 p.m. PT.
IN THE POLLS: Neither UC Davis, nor Hawai'i, are ranked in the latest national polls this week.
AGGIES IN THE RPI: Despite losing three of four games last week, the Aggies fell only one spot to No. 69 in the latest NCAA RPI released on Monday morning (May 6)… UC Davis ranks second among its Big West sistren, trailing only league-leading Cal State Fullerton (No. 46)… The Aggies have been ranked among the top 100 in the RPI in each of the last eight weeks — the longest such run in the program's Division I history… This week's ranking is only five spots behind the program's best of No. 64 set back on March 31 of this year… When UC Davis made its debut at No. 98 in the season's first report on March 17, it marked the first time that the Aggies have been ranked among the top 100 since they are No. 95 on March 22, 2015.
BIG WEST BIG PICTURE: Picked to finish third in the race for the league title at the start of the season, UC Davis enters the regular season's final weekend in third place with an 11-7 overall record, standing one game ahead of fourth-place Long Beach State, two back of Hawai'i in third, and four behind league-leading Cal State Fullerton. The Rainbow Wahine are just two games back of the Titans with three to play. A win by the Titans on Friday would give them a share of the title, while two wins (or a loss by Hawai'i on Thursday and a win by Fullerton on Friday) would make them outright winners.
SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WAHINE: Hawai'i enters the final week of the regular season with a 32-14 overall record and a 13-5 mark in Big West play following a series victory over CSUN on the road that has the Rainbow Wahine winners in five of their last six… Hawai'i is 24-9 at home this season, playing only nine true road games in 2019, and has won its last seven straight at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium… Junior Callee Heen leads Hawai'i at the plate, batting .373 with 26 runs scored, 14 home runs, and 45 RBI… Senior infielder Nicole Lopez gives the Rainbow Wahine a powerful 1-2 punch in the top of the lineup, hitting .365 with 43 runs scored, 12 doubles, 12 home runs, and 31 runs driven in… Senior right-hander Brittany Hitchcock leads the staff in the circle, posting a 19-7 overall record and a 1.75 ERA in 29 games (156.1 innings), striking out 95 and holding opponents to a .233 average.
SERIES NOTES: Hawai'i leads the all-time series with UC Davis by a 14-6 count according to records that date back to the 2009 season… The Aggies have won the last two meetings with the Rainbow Wahine after winning the three-game series at La Rue Field last season… Hawai'i has won 10 of the 11 meetings between the two in Honolulu, with UC Davis posting its lone win by the score of 7-6 in the second of a three-game series in 2017.
SOUNDS LIKE A BROKEN RECORD: The Aggies' offense has been prolific this season, setting or tying six Division I single-season marks at the plate thus far and closing in on six more, while the pitching staff has set marks for wins (37) and shutouts (16), while approaching the records for team ERA (1.86 in 2009) and winning percentage (.529 in 2018). The offensive records include runs scored (236), home runs (29), RBI (205), walks (144), total bases (521), and sacrifice flies (15), with records for hits (397 in 2017), doubles (60 in 2009), and triples (12 in 2001 and 2017).
SOFTBALL AMERICA ADDS YANEZ TO PITCHER OF THE YEAR LIST: Adding to a lengthy laundry list of honors and accolades already handed out in her name, UC Davis sophomore left-hander
Brooke Yanez has added yet another for the 2019 season, selected by Softball America to its midseason Pitcher of the Year watch list on April 18. Along with Florida's Kelly Barnhill, who was the No. 1 pick in the recent National Pro Fastpitch College Draft, and Louisiana's Summer Ellyson, Yanez has been garnering national attention all season long as the Aggies hit the midway point of their Big West Conference schedule. AGGIE SHORT HOPS…
• The Aggies' 37 victories this season lead the Big West Conference, extending the program's Division I single-season record and the most wins since the 2003 squad finished 53-15 en route to the NCAA Division II national championship
• The 11 league wins mark only the fourth time that the Aggies have reached double digits in conference play and are the most since the 2013 squad finished 11-13 in Big West Play
• In the other column we don't like to talk about much, the 13 defeats this season would be the fewest (if the number holds) since the 2003 team lost only 15 games en route to the national title
• Belated congratulations to Head Coach
Erin Thorpe, who won her 100th career game as an Aggie on March 12 against Sacramento State
• With hits in each of the team's four games last week sophomore
Alyse Rojas extended her hitting streak to six games, batting .429 (9-for-21) with five runs scored during that span, raising her average 11 points to .362 on the year
• Rojas' two hits in the series finale marked her team-best 14th multi-hit game of the season and the 33rd such performance of her career, moving her into fifth on the school's Division I career list for that category (Christa Castello holds the record with 62)
• Thanks to her 55 hits on the season, Rojas now ranks seventh on the school's Division I single-season list — a chart on which she already ranks second with her 61 hits in 2018
• Rojas' 116 hits puts her just 23 shy of the top five in the program's Division I history after only two years
• With her two runs scored in the finale, Rojas also extended her single-season Division I program record with 43, placing her just seven shy of Holly Shurrum (1997) for fifth on the all-time single-season list
• Give it up for Marissa! Junior
Marissa Jauregui set the program's Division I single-season record with her 11th sacrifice hit of the season in the series finale against Long Beach State
• Senior
Meghan Bradbury's RBI in the finale gave her 40 on the year, extending her Division I program single-season record and posting the most since Susan Churchwell (53), Lindsay Moore (50), and Megan Turman (45), in 2003
• Junior
Isabella Leon walked twice on Sunday in Long Beach, giving her 25 for the year and moving her to within one free pass of Julie Stauder's Division I program single-season record and a five-way tie for fifth on the all-time season chart
• Junior
Maddie Rojas' 13 career multi-RBI performances are tied for 10th on the school's Division I list (
Ashley Lotoszynski leads the way with 25)
• Of senior
Meghan Bradbury's 40 hits this season, a team-high 20 have gone for extra bases
• Bradbury and Given's 11 doubles this season are tied for fourth on the program's Division I single-season list — just two shy of the record shared by Amy Nunez (2014), Elizabeth Santana (2010), and Marissa Araujo (2009)
• Bradbury's 40 RBI this season are a program Division I single-season school record and one of four current Aggies among the top 10: Given (t3rd with 30),
Alyse Rojas (t8th with 25), and
Maddie Rojas (t8th with 25)
• Yanez's 24th win this past weekend give her sole possession of fifth on the school's all-time single-season list, just five back of Amy Rosson (2003) and Gena Weber (1997) for third
• Meanwhile, Yanez's seven strikeouts in the series finale moved her season total to 241, jumping her past Rosson (2003) and into fourth on the the all-time single-season list, just 31 shy of Justine Vela's 2012 total which stands third and is the Division I program single-season record
• With 22 more strikeouts, Yanez would match Cal Poly's Sierra Hyland for 10th on the Big West single-season list
• The 29 home runs are the most by an Aggie squad since the 2007 team slugged 35 and are tied for the fifth-most in a season according to records that date back to 1982
