Yanez picks up fourth Big West weekly honor

Sophomore claims seventh career pitcher of the week award

DAVIS, Calif. — A pair of shutout performances against league rival UC Santa Barbara has lifted UC Davis sophomore communication major Brooke Yanez to her fourth Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week honor this season, it was announced on Monday afternoon.

One of only three Aggie pitchers to have won pitcher of the week honors since joining the conference in 2008, her four weekly awards this season are tied for the ninth-most in a single campaign in league history, while her seven career awards ranks just outside the top 10.

The Ventura, Calif., native was spotless in the circle against the Gauchos, tossing 12 shutout innings en route to wins in games one and three, improving to 19-2 overall on the season — just one victory shy of the school's Division I single season record held by Justine Vela, who won 20 games in 2012.

Yanez, who struck out 19 hitters and held opponents to a .186 average on the weekend, has not allowed a run over her last 17 innings work and has denied opponents an earned run in her last 20 innings or work.

She opened the weekend with a four-hit shutout in a 3-0 UC Davis victory, fanning 12 UC Santa Barbara hitters for her seventh double-digit strikeout game of the season. Two days later, she entered in relief during a 9-0 victory in the series finale, throwing the last five innings and striking out seven.

The win in the opener marked her sixth shutout of the season — a mark that ranks tied for third in the program's Division I single-season history — while helping the Aggies set a new Division I program benchmark with their 13th and 14th shutouts of the year over the weekend. Yanez's 183 strikeouts are just seven shy of her freshman year total that ranks fourth on the school's single-season Division I list, and stands seventh in the nation entering this week's contests.

She also ranks No. 4 in the nation in earned run average, No. 5 in wins, No. 13 in strikeouts per seven innings (9.9), and No. 27 in fewest hits allowed per seven innings (4.4).

UC Davis looks for its 30th win of the season this weekend, hosting Cal Poly in a three-game series at La Rue Field. The series opens with a doubleheader on "Picnic Day" Saturday (April 13) at 1 p.m., following by a single game on Sunday (April 14), also at 1 p.m.
