DAVIS, Calif. — Playing in just his second dual of the year, soon-to-be graduate Mitchell Iwahiro's match was left unfinished as the Aggies fell to UC Santa Barbara in their last home match of the season.
The Aggies fall to 10-9 overall, and 0-3 in the Big West Conference with the loss, and will look to get their first conference wins next weekend at UC Irvine and UC Riverside.
In a tightly contested doubles point, the Gauchos claimed court two, while one and three were in a battle for the first point of the day. UCSB made a comeback on court three to win the doubles point for the 1-0 advantage, while Daniel Landa and David Goulak were at 5-6 at the clinch.
In singles play, the Gauchos boasted a lineup of three nationally-ranked singles players in the top three spots. Playing without usual starters Ivan Thamma and Nil Giraldez, the Aggies were shorthanded, and dropped three matches to clinch the match at 4-0. Playing at No. 2 for the first time in his career, Chethan Swanson was competing against No. 51 Joseph Guillin, but was down a set and 1-4. Arjith Jayaraman saw action at No. 4, and was at 1-1 in the second set, while Iwahiro battled in his first set, and was early in the second when the match was ended.
The Aggies will have the weekend off before traveling south to face UC Riverside on Saturday, Apr. 19, and UC Irvine on Sunday, Apr. 20 as the last two matches of the regular season. Both matches are slated for 11 AM.
