RIVERSIDE, Calif. — UC Davis men's tennis opened the final regular season road trip through Southern California with a dominant 4-1 win over UC Riverside on Friday.

Snapping a three-match losing streak, the Aggies took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. The No. 66 nationally-ranked pair of David Goulak and Ivan Thamma returned to the court, and made quick work over Anderson Ju and Filip Engrstom, winning 6-0. Daniel Landa and Alex Scemanenco sealed the doubles point on court two, winning 7-5 over Kyle McCann and A. Whelan-Merediz, who were a team-best 11-8 at the second position. Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson were tied 5-5 at the clinch.

In singles play, Thamma got back into the win column, dispatching Nabil Abdullah at No. 2, dropping just two games in the process and recording his most dominant win of the season thus far. UC Riverside responded with a win at No. 3 to get within a point at 2-1 in favor of the Aggies, but Arjith Jayaraman put up his fifth consecutive win, and improved his perfect record at No. 6 to an impressive 8-0 this season, securing the third Aggie point with a 7-6, 6-1 win.

Playing under the clinch format, the remaining three singles matches began the race to finish, as the Aggies were just one win away from hitting the four-point threshold, and all three Aggies had claimed the first set.

With Goulak and Landa reaching similar scores at the same time, Goulak would come out ahead in his match, clinching the final point for the Aggies with a 6-4, 6-4 win over McCann. Landa was up 5-4 at the clinch, and Swanson was up a set, but down 2-4 in the second, when their matches were left unfinished.

The Aggies improve to 11-9 overall, and 1-3 in the Big West, while UC Riverside falls to 19-14 overall, and 1-4 in the Big West. Friday's win sets up a critical matchup against the UC Irvine Anteaters tomorrow, as the Anteaters are 2-2 in conference standings. A win would put the Aggies at 2-3 to tie with UC Irvine, with the potential for a three-way tie for the Big West Championship's third seed if Hawaii (1-3 BWC) upsets conference-leader UC Santa Barbara (3-0 BWC) on Sunday. Saturday's match between the Anteaters and the Aggies is slated for 11 AM at the Anteater Tennis Stadium. Live scoring will be available through the Aggies' Twitter page (@UCDavisMTennis).
