DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis men's tennis fell to Big West Conference rival Cal Poly 4-0 at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, snapping a 2-0 streak against the Mustangs when competing at home.

Doubles started aggressively from both teams, but the Mustangs jumped out to quick leads on courts one and two, taking the doubles point with identical 6-2 results.

In singles, the match was tightly contested on several courts, with Arjith Jayaraman looking for his fifth straight win, and third at No. 5, as he came from behind to take the first set. Daniel Landa and Nil Giraldez battled for their first sets, but both fell in a tiebreaker, leaving Jayaraman as the only Aggie to start ahead in his match.

Cal Poly nabbed wins on courts one and six, bringing the team score to 3-0 in favor of the Mustangs, when the remaining four matches were deep into the second set. Jayaraman, Giraldez, Landa, and Chethan Swanson faced must-win situations, as UC Davis needed each match to be able to claim a victory. However, with Giraldez down a set and 4-5, Swanson fighting back in the second set tiebreaker and serving at 5-6, and Jayaraman at 1-2 in the third, Cal Poly clinched the match on Landa's court with a 7-6, 7-5 result.

The Aggies fall to 10-8, 0-2 BWC with the loss, while Cal Poly improves to 10-7, 2-0 BWC. Action continues at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on Sunday, as the Aggies host defending Big West Champions UC Santa Barbara at 1 PM in the last home match of the 2019 season. The Aggies will honor redshirt-sophomore captain Mitchell Iwahiro, as he has elected to graduate a year early. After redshirting his first year on campus, Iwahiro has faced several setbacks, and has been largely out of action due to injury the last two years. Serving as one of the officers on UC Davis' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Iwahiro has been a leader on and off the court, representing UC Davis at the Big West SAAC Conference, and helping to make a difference in the Davis community. Please join UC Davis men's tennis for a Senior Day ceremony at the UC Santa Barbara match on Sunday.
