Aggies celebrate seniors in home finale

DAVIS, Calif. — Sophomore Alyse Rojas and junior Marisa Given each had hits and executed a perfect double steal to stake their team to an early lead, but a pair of big middle innings by Cal State Fullerton were enough to lift the first-place Titans to a 5-1 victory in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field.

The game marked the final regular season appearance at home for the six members of the Aggies' senior class of Alex Sotomayor, Megan Salazar, Caroline Figueroa, Autumn Miller, Sara Cadona, and Meghan Bradbury, but the emotion of the day wasn't enough to lift UC Davis to victory, falling to 36-10 overall on the year and 10-5 in league play.

Fullerton, meanwhile, improved to 32-16 overall and 12-3 in league play, as the duo of Taylor Dockins and Dani Martinez (14-6) held UC Davis hitless over the final six innings after surrendering the early score.

Following a 1-2-3 first, Alyse Rojas led-off the home half with bunt single, was sacrificed to second by teammate Marissa Jauregui, and moved up 60 feet to third on a single down the left field line by Given to put runners at the corners.

With Isabella Leon at the plate, Given took off for second, drawing a throw and allowing Rojas enough time to easily scoot home for the 1-0 lead.

The score stayed that way until the fourth when the Titans took the lead for good as Daisy Munoz's three-run home run erased the one-run deficit and Ari Williams' tacked on a fifth-inning two-run single for the final advantage.

Starter Brooke Yanez (23-5) suffered the loss, but struck out four in the effort, giving her 227 for the season to move into fifth place on the all-time single-season list, passing Amy Rosson and her 2004 total (226). Yanez, whose total this season also moves her past Jessica Hancock's 2008 total (225) for second on the program's Division I single-season chart, now needs just 13 more to match Rosson's 240 strikeouts in 2003 for fourth on the all-time list.

In scoring the first run of the game, Alyse Rojas takes over as the program's single-season Division I record holder with her 40th score of the year — the most by an Aggie since Lindsay Moore (46), Megan Turman (44), and Susan Churchwell (42) in 2003.

UC Davis returns to action with its final mid-week game of the year on Tuesday (April 30) at 3 p.m., facing Causeway rival Sacramento State on the road, before heading to Southern California for a three-game series against Long Beach State on May 4-5. First pitch against the 49ers is scheduled for 1 p.m. on both days.
