SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sophomore
Alyse Rojas and junior
Autumn Miller each finished with a pair of hits on the day, but host Sacramento State limited the damage by stranding 10 UC Davis baserunners en route to a 6-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
The Aggies dropped their second straight in falling to 36-11 overall, splitting the regular season series with the Hornets following a 4-0 win at La Rue Field earlier this season. Sacramento State, meanwhile, needed just four hits to score its six runs, improving to 29-20 overall.
Alyse Rojas, who singled to left to lead off the game and doubled to try and spark a seventh-inning rally, tallied her team-best 13th multi-hit game of the season and her ninth two-hit performance of the year. Miller, who logged back-to-back singles in the fourth and fifth innings, put together her third multi-hit performance of the year and her first since finishing 2-for-3 against Weber State on March 1.
A sacrifice fly in the first and a two-run home run in the third gave the homestanding Hornets all the runs they would need, as the Aggies struck for their only run of the game with two outs in the fifth to spoil the shutout.
Marissa Jauregui, who has hits in five of her last six games, singled to start the rally and moved to third on a single by
Marisa Given and a passed ball to put a pair in scoring position.
Meghan Bradbury walked to load the bases and Miller brought home Jauregui with an infield single to short to make it 3-1.
Sacramento State then put the game out of reach with three in the home half of the fifth, slugging its second home run of the day, and used heads-up baserunning to score on a wild pitch and a rundown with runners at the corners and two outs.
Junior right-hander
Katie Kibby (11-6) suffered the loss, allowing all six runs on four hits, striking out one over five innings. Senior left-hander
Sara Cadona faced four batters to finish up the game, striking out one in her inning of work.
Savanna Corr (19-10) went the distance for the Hornets, allowing the run on seven hits while walking three, retiring seven of the final nine hitters she faced after UC Davis put up a run.
Tuesday's game was the non-conference finale for the Aggies, who kicked off a run of seven straight games away from home to close out the regular season. UC Davis heads to Southern California this weekend for a three-game series at Long Beach State beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday (May 4) followed by a single game on Sunday (May 5).
For those who can't make the trip to Long Beach, all three games will be carried on the ESPN family of networks, with Saturday's doubleheader streamed live on ESPN3, followed by an appearance on ESPNU for Sunday's series finale.
