DAVIS, Calif. -- Redshirt sophomore Alejandro Lara's power was on full display on Monday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium as the first baseman tied the Division I record for single-game home runs slugging a pair off the bench for the Aggies, but it wasn't enough as UC Davis lost to San Francisco by the score of 19-14.
Lara became the seventh Aggie to log two home runs in a single game and the first since Austin March tallied two against Pacific back on April 26, 2015. The Fairfield-native finished the day 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored, while fellow redshirt sophomore Spencer Gedestad, who also homered in the ninth, finished 3-for-6 with a team-high five RBI.
With this defeat, UC Davis drops to 11-22. The win for San Francisco brings their record to 24-16. Junior Grant Young earned the win for the San Francisco, bringing his record to 2-2. Junior Andres Lara took the loss for the Aggies, falling to 0-1 on the season.
UC Davis used Lara and four other pitchers to complete the ballgame. Lara threw the game's first inning, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on three hits while walking three and striking out two. The other four hurlers combined to allow 15 runs on 20 hits, walk two, and strike out five.
The five UC Davis pitchers worked their way through the San Francisco lineup facing 59 hitters, retiring 14 via flyout.
Lara led the way offensively for UC Davis, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs. Gedestad compiled a standout performance as well, going 3-for-6 with a three-run homer and five RBIs. Senior Garret Kelly also contributed for UC Davis, going 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs. San Francisco's offensive attack was led by senior Riley Helland, who went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs on the day.
Overall, UC Davis pushed across their 14 runs off of 15 hits, six of which went for extra bases, including four home runs. The Aggies supplemented their attack by drawing seven walks from San Francisco pitchers. UC Davis did some two-out damage as well, going 6-for-15 in those situations, with two of those hits coming from Gedestad.
The Aggies will look to even the series with the Dons when the two teams meet at Benedetti Diamond tomorrow (Apr. 23) with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. PT.
