Aggies answer with 4-2 win over San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO -- Thanks in part to a quality outing on the bump from senior right-hander Blake Hannah, UC Davis picked up the 4-2 win against San Francisco on Tuesday, April 23.

The triumph brings UC Davis' record to 12-22 on the season. Hannah got his third win of 2019 for the Aggies, bringing his record to 3-3. The loss for San Francisco drops their 2019 mark to 24-17, as well as freshman Josh Mollerus' record to 0-4.

UC Davis used Hannah and four other pitchers to complete the Aggies victory. Hannah threw the game's first six innings, giving up no runs on three hits while walking none and striking out three. The other four hurlers combined to allow two runs on three hits, walk three, and fan three. Junior Steve Ouellette secured the game's final three outs to pick up his third save.

The five UC Davis pitchers worked their way through the San Francisco lineup facing 34 hitters, retiring 11 via groundout. The Aggies were helped by their excellent pitching in pressure situations, as they limited San Francisco hitters to 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Junior Cooper Morrison led the way offensively for UC Davis, going 1-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Alejandro Lara compiled a standout performance as well, going 0-for-2 with three walks. Sophomore Spencer Gedestad also chipped in for UC Davis, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. San Francisco's lineup was led by sophomore Jack Winkler, who went 2-for-3 on the day.

Overall, UC Davis plated their four runs on three hits, one of which went for extra bases, including one home run. The Aggies improved on their attack by drawing eight free passes from San Francisco pitchers. UC Davis also did significant damage on the basepaths, swiping four bags on the day, with two coming from Lara.

UC Davis resumes Big West Conference action this Friday (Apr. 26), as the Aggies host Long Beach State for a three-game set at Phil Swimley Field.
