DAVIS, Calif. — In UC Davis' Big West Conference opener, the Aggies fell 4-3 to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Tuesday afternoon at Marya Welch Tennis Center.
Coming off a huge victory over Gonzaga on Sunday, the Aggies were slow out of the gates, dropping the doubles point in rare fashion. Once again, Ivan Thamma was missing from the doubles lineup, but David Goulak and Daniel Landa earned a 6-4 win at No. 1 for their second straight. However, it was the only match the Aggies would win, as the Rainbow Warriors took the point with wins on courts two and three.
In singles play, Hawaii freshman standout Andre Ilagan won his eighth match at the No. 1 position, defeating Goulak in straight sets, while Thamma fell on court two to Lucas Labrunie, giving the Warriors the 3-0 advantage.
Playing on court five, Landa buckled down to give UC Davis its first point of the day, winning 6-4, 6-4 over Tristan Martins. Following suit, Arjith Jayaraman won ten consecutive games to rebound from a 0-4 start in the first set to close his match 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6. Jayaraman is now 7-0 in that position, and is on a four-match win streak.
With Chethan Swanson early in the second set, and Nil Giraldez fighting in a third set, attention turned to Giraldez on court three, as the team score was 3-2 in favor of the visitors. While Giraldez made an effort to come back from a 0-3 deficit, Hawaii's Blaz Seric pulled off big shots, winning the match for the 'Bows.
After the clinch, Swanson downed his opponent in straight sets for a 4-3 team score. The Aggies fall to 10-7, 0-1 in the Big West, while the 'Bows improve to 7-8, 1-0 in the Big West.
The Aggies will close their homestand this weekend, hosting Cal Poly on Saturday and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. On Sunday, UC Davis men's tennis will honor sophomore Mitchell Iwahiro, who will be graduating this spring, after redshirting his freshman year and wrapping up his undergraduate degree a year early.
