STANFORD, Calif. — Closing out the regular season, senior Annie Kutt and junior Kathleen Schafle led the Aggies in scoring against the top-ranked Cardinal, but No. 9 UC Davis women's water polo ultimately fell 8-24 at the Avery Aquatic Center on Friday evening.
Finishing with two goals apiece, Kutt and Schafle put up half of the team's goals, while McKenna Hauss, Emily Byrne, Cassidy Smithson, and Alyssa Lengtat each added one. Lengtat's goal is just the second of her career as an Aggie, and first against a Division I opponent.
In addition to the goal-scorers, Chloe Robinson and Julia Hartmann contributed with an assist each, along with Byrne and Lengtat. Robinson's 38th assist this season bumps her to tie for sixth all-time with Erin Schlueter (2013 season). With a correction on the drawn exclusion statistic, the addition of drawn five-meter penalty fouls puts Byrne tied at third all-time with Dakotah Mohr (2011 season) for single season numbers, as she added one drawn exclusion against Stanford to total 78 so far this year.
Sophia Noble was in the cage for the Aggies tonight, earning her third career start. Against the nation's top-ranked team, Noble was able to pick up seven saves throughout three quarters, including three from five-meter penalty shots. Lauren Hooyer entered the pool for the fourth period, holding the Cardinal to it's lowest-scoring quarter of four goals.
No. 1 Stanford was led by the Fischer sisters — Aria and Makenzie — and Hannah Shabb, who all finished with four goals, as well as Madison Stamen and Madison Berggren who completed hat tricks with three goals each.
The Aggies wrapped up their 2019 regular season with a 17-11 overall, and 3-2 Big West Conference record, and have officially clinched the No. 3 seed at the Big West Championships next week in Long Beach. UC Davis will open play against No. 6 CSUN in the quarterfinal round on Friday, April 26, at 3 PM. More information about the Big West Championship Tournament will be released on UCDavisAggies.com soon.
