Scotland’s Megan Jones joins Aggies’ front court

DAVIS, Calif. — Reaching across the Atlantic to find the next great Aggie, UC Davis head women's basketball coach Jennifer Gross announced Wednesday that Scotland's Megan Jones has signed a grant-in-aid agreement to continue her academic and athletic career with the three-time defending Big West Conference champions.

Jones becomes the third newcomer to the Aggies' roster for the 2019-20 season, joining previously announced signees Campbell Gray and Evanne Turner, who inked National Letters of Intent with the university back in November. The fifth international student-athlete in the program's Division I history, she joins Canadians Sage Stobbart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and Mackenzie Trpcic (Hamilton, Ontario) on the roster.

"We are so excited that Megan is joining our Aggie family," Gross said. "A high-level competitor who brings a wealth of international experience to the program, Megan is an extremely versatile player who is able to score from around the basket, shoot the ball from the perimeter, as well as face-up and attack the rim.

"She is long and runs the floor well which will enhance our up-tempo style of play while, defensively, she is a tremendous shot blocker and her length and instincts on defense will be a huge asset to the team. Megan is a bright, driven student and an amazing person and teammate, making her a perfect fit here at UC Davis."

A veteran of international competition with both the Scotland Senior Women's National Team and the Great Britain National Team, including a trip to the 2017 FIBA U18 European Championships and finishing fourth, the 6-foot-3 forward — who sports a 6-foot-6 wingspan — bolsters the UC Davis front court after helping Charnwood College to the Women's Elite Academy Basketball League title in 2019.

She earned All-WEABL first team and finals MVP honors after finishing with 14 points (7-for-7 from the field), eight rebounds, and three blocks in a 66-40 win over City of London Academy in the title game, averaging just over nine points and just under six rebounds per game while shooting 56 percent from the floor during the WEABL season in 2019. Overall, she averaged 12.6 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game, for the year.

In 2018, Jones averaged 9.0 ppg, 10.7 rpg, and 2.3 bpg, in 2018 while helping Charnwood College to the WEABL championship game appearance, while averaging 6.4 ppg, 6.7 rpg, and 2.7 bpg, for her club team — the Leicester Riders — helping the latter to a 19-1 record and a Women's British Basketball League title, a 2017 U18 England National League finals appearance, and a 2017 Women's National Basketball League Division I Cup semifinals berth.

In other international action, Jones represented her country at the 2018 ISF World 3-on-3, as well as the National Great Britain 3-on-3, championships, winning the title at the former in Belgrade, Serbia.

The daughter of Kathleen Harper, she has a sister, Eleanor, who plays basketball at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
