DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis men's tennis won its first round over New Mexico State in a 4-3 nail- biter, but dropped the semifinal rematch against Nevada, 2-4.

Continuing with its doubles success, UC Davis won the doubles point in an all-Aggie school matchup, getting wins on courts one and two. Ivan Thamma and David Goulak were the first off, logging a 6-2 win, with Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson clinching the point at 6-3. Daniel Landa and Alex Scemanenco were leading 5-4 when doubles was stopped.

Moving into singles, UC Davis struggled to close out the match after Nil Giraldez and Swanson put the team up 3-1 with singles wins of their own. New Mexico State battled back, saving match points to win the matches on courts one and five to even the overall score at 3-3. With all the attention on Arjith Jayaraman at No. 6, UC Davis found itself in a tough position, as the sophomore was down 3-4 in the third set. However, Jayaraman had nerves of steel, and reeled off three games to clinch the match in favor of UC Davis, 6-4, for the first win over a Division I opponent since Nevada on Jan. 26.

After a quick turnaround, the Aggies were back in action in the semifinal of the dual tournament, facing Nevada for the second time this season. Last time out, the Aggies won in a tough 4-3 match, taking the doubles point. This time, Nevada won the doubles point, delivering Thamma and Goulak just their second dual season loss of the year, and the third overall doubles point loss for the Aggies.

UC Davis responded with quick wins from Goulak at No. 2, and Scemanenco at No. 6; both won in straight sets to put the Aggies up 2-1. Unfortunately, that would be turn out to be the only points the Aggies would earn, as the Wolfpack would win the next two in straight sets of their own, before clinching in a third set at No. 3.

The Aggies return to action tomorrow in the third and fourth place playoff, facing Hawaii in a non-conference dual. The match will start at 10:30 AM to accommodate the Celebration of Champions event, along with the women's tennis match.

To add to a busy weekend, join the current men's and women's tennis teams in honoring UC Davis' NCAA National championship tennis teams from 1990, '92, and '93 at the home matches on Saturday. There will be a Celebration of Champions event held for UC Davis tennis alumni and fans, taking place on Saturday during the final round of the Golden State Invite, as well as during the home match between UC Davis women's tennis and St. Mary's, beginning at 1:30 PM. Then, the three Championship teams will be honored during halftime of the men's basketball game at The Pavilion, tipoff is scheduled for 5 PM.
