DAVIS, Calif. — To conclude the winter quarter portion of the schedule, the Aggies ended Yale's four-match win streak with a 4-2 victory at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon to even the all-time series between the programs
UC Davis dropped the doubles point for just the fourth time this season, but not before the dynamic duo of David Goulak and Ivan Thamma logged yet another win at No. 1, bumping them to 18-3 on the year and 10-2 in duals.
Yale entered singles play with a 1-0 advantage, but that quickly disappeared as Nil Giraldez recorded the first win for the Aggies at No. 3 to kick-off UC Davis' singles run. Giraldez dispatched Arnav Dhingra 6-1, 6-3 to be the first match off the court, while most others were just finishing their first sets.
Following Giraldez's example, Chethan Swanson closed out a tough first set over Cody Lin, and continued to build momentum for a straight-set win of his own at No. 4. Arjith Jayaraman won his sixth match at the No. 6 spot in the singles lineup to maintain his undefeated record in the position with a 7-5, 7-5 battle to put the Aggies up 3-1 overall.
Yale would take the match on court one by a single break of serve in both sets, as the Bulldogs' Dylan King moved to 10-1 this year, and 3-0 at the No. 1 spot. Thamma and Daniel Landa were the last remaining Aggies on courts two and five, with Thamma up a set and on-serve, while Landa was fighting to force a third set.
With both players trading holds of serve, Thamma put the pressure on San Marino, Calif. native Ryan Cheng in the final service game of the match, to get the break and clinch the match, 4-2, in favor of the Aggies. Landa was about to force a third set, as he was leading 6-5 in the second, when the match was left unfinished at the clinch.
The Aggies improve to 9-5 this season, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-5. UC Davis will enjoy the next two weeks off, and will return to action at home, hosting Northern Arizona on Mar. 29th at 1 PM at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
