Carter picks up weekly Big West award in outdoor debut

DAVIS, Calif. — Freshman sprinter Kirsten Carter won the first Big West Track Athlete of the Week of the 2019 season, and the first of her career, continuing the track legacy at UC Davis.

In her outdoor debut, Carter placed second at the Cal Opener in both the 100m and the 200m, with each mark being the fastest in the Big West. With her 11.88 in the 100m, Carter was the only Big West runner to finish under 12 seconds, and just one of two in the nation, as she was 0.03 seconds behind the first place runner at the Cal Opener. As a freshman, Carter's 100m time sits at No. 8 all-time in the outdoor record book.

Finishing second in the 200m, Carter ran a 24.46 to sit second in both the West Region and the NCAA after the opening weekend of action.

Carter's award continues the accomplishments of the program, as the Aggies have received at least one Athlete of the Week nod each year since joining the Big West. Carter is the first freshman since Kierra Davis (2017) to receive a weekly track award, and just the fourth freshman in program history.

Outdoor track continues its season this weekend, hosting the Aggie Invitational at the Woody Wilson Track. The hammer and javelin will compete on Friday afternoon at the Hammer Ring, with the rest of the meet taking place on Saturday, beginning with the long jump at 9 AM.
