Aggies clipped in final minute at The Mount

UC Davis rallied to 10-6 lead before surrendering five straight down the stretch

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Senior midfielder Taylor Cuenin netted four goals while Shannon Cross and Mar Alvear added two scores each, but a 5-0 finish and a last-minute goal by Mountaineer freshman Jordan Groover saw UC Davis fall from a 10-6 lead to an 11-10 setback to Mount St. Mary's in collegiate women's lacrosse action at Waldron Family Stadium Saturday.

The Aggies even their season record to 7-7. The Mountaineers pick up their fifth straight win in improving to 8-2 overall.

Junior attacker Amanda Outcalt led all players with three assists for UC Davis, while junior Sorana Larson and freshman Natalie Wilson accounted for the balance of their team's 10 goals. Alvear also led the Aggies with five draw controls, with juniors Kate Graham and Maddie Myers winning three each. Sophomore goalkeeper had nine saves for the game.

For the Mount, sophomore Jordan Butler matched Cuenin's total of four goals. Groover had two goals and an assist, all of which came in the final run of five unanswered goals. She hit the game-winner with just 26 seconds remaining after teammate and goalkeeper Jillian Petito stopped a third-chance Aggie shot at 1:38. The Mount called a timeout, cleared the midfield, then scored less than a minute later. Emily Davis then won the ensuing draw to help protect the comeback victory.

The two teams battled closely throughout the game, including four ties in the first half. Larson scored on an eight-meter chance with nine ticks left in the first half to give UC Davis a 5-4 edge at the break, then Cross scored the first goal of the second half to extend the margin to 6-4. However, the Mount had goals from Carly Miller and Davis in the 38th and 41st minutes, respectively, to equalize at 6-6.

The Aggies responded with four straight goals -- two from Alvear and two from Cuenin -- to craft a 10-6 lead with 9:14 left. UC Davis only managed two shots before the Mount battled back to a 10-10 standoff and the contest's sixth tie. An unforced turnover gave the Aggies possession with less than three minutes remaining, but three straight shots failed to find the back of the net. Marie Dickson's recovery after the Petito save provided the Mountaineers with their go-ahead possession.

Saturday's contest proved close in almost every statistical category. Both teams took 28 shots, UC Davis outdrew its host by a 12-11 margin and committed one fewer turnover (14 to 15). Petito collected 11 saves, two more than her counterpart Mathieson, including the pivotal stop in the final minutes.

UC Davis returns to action for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation road game at Fresno State next Saturday.
