FRESNO, Calif. -- Junior midfielder
Maddie Myers and senior midfielder
Taylor Cuenin each netted four goals with an assist while junior
Amanda Outcalt matched her teammates' five points with a hat trick and two assists, helping UC Davis explode from an early deficit to a 19-10 victory over Fresno State in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at the Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 8-7 for the year and open MPSF play at 1-0. The Bulldogs slip to 7-5 overall.
Senior
Shannon Cross, sophomore
Mar Alvear and freshman
Natalie Wilson each added two goals for UC Davis, while
Sorana Larson and
Brooke Long also found the net once apiece. Junior
Kate Graham led the Aggies with eight draw controls, helping her team dominate that department by a 19-11 margin. Sophomore
Taylor Mathieson tallied 12 saves before senior goalkeeper and former UC Davis softball standout
Ashley Lotoszynski took over the cage duties for the final minute.
Fresno State's freshman Sydney Skalstad led her team with three goals, while Hannah Krats had a goal and two assists for three points.
The Aggies fell into an immediate hole, trailing 5-0 in the first 6:47 of play and trailing by a 6-1 deficit as late as the 18th minute. Bulldog junior Laurel Maunder had six of her 10 total saves in that opening stretch, holding UC Davis to 0-for-8 shooting. That drought ended just as quickly, however, as Myers' eight-meter goal with 12:36 left in the first half began a 6-0 finish before break, giving UC Davis a 7-6 haltime edge.
Cuenin then scored the first three goals of the second half, eventually extending the Aggies' offensive outburst to a 12-0 run -- transforming that initial 6-1 deficit into a commanding 13-6 lead. Myers had three of her goals in the second half, as UC Davis extended its margin to 16-7 thanks to another three unanswered from the 44th through 51st minutes.
Overall, UC Davis outshot its host by a 42-32 margin, including 21-12 in the second half. The Aggies also took advantage of Bulldog eight-meter fouls, scoring four goals (on 11 shots) on free positions.
UC Davis returns to action on Saturday, April 13 with a home conference game against San Diego State. That contest, part of the university's Picnic Day slate, also serves as Senior Day. The Aggies will also host the MPSF Championship on April 26 and 28.
