LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Competing at a multitude of meets, the Aggies won three events, collected a dozen personal records, and set four new all-time top-ten standards in Saturday's action.
Cal State Fullerton hosted the Titan Team Challenge, where Erika Contreras and Marlene Gutierrez highlighted the meet for the Aggies. Contreras, who had already broken into UC Davis' top-ten in the hammer throw, set a new PR in both the hammer and the discus throws. In hammer, Contreras took home the event title, throwing 54.90m (180-01), bettering her previous best of 51.00m (167-04) by nearly four meters, and improving to fifth all-time. Contreras continued her success in the discus, placing sixth overall, with a mark of 45.94m (150-09), landing her tied for eighth all-time with Hannah Royall as the first new top-ten in two seasons. Not to be outdone, Gutierrez also PR'ed in both of her events — the hammer and the shot put — writing her name in the shot put records as ninth all-time at 13.87m (45-06.25) in her freshman season.
Also competing in Southern California, Kyle Clancy broke the 14.50 second barrier in the 110m high hurdles for the first time, finishing with a personal best of 14.30 at the UCLA Jim Bush Legends Invitational. Clancy's finish improved his previously eighth all-time mark, ranking him above teammate Anthony Easter for sixth all-time. In the men's 400m, Anthony Easter finished fourth overall in his debut in the event, running 48.22. Freshman Max Glasser was not far behind, improving upon his previous PR of 48.79, crossing in 48.48.
In the field portion of the meet, Drake Foote recorded a PR for the third consecutive meet, this time clearing 2.07m (6-09.50) in the high jump to finish fourth overall in the "elite" flight. Also seeing success, Drew Xandrine-Anderson won the men's triple jump with 15.31m (50-02.75), and was the only competitor to land beyond 15 meters.
In Northern California, Xolan Brown represented the Aggies at the prestigious Stanford Invitational, competing in the men's 800m run. Brown finished 22nd overall with a season-best time of 1:52.46, putting him on the bubble to qualify for the NCAA West Regional in May.
With a slight schedule change, the Aggies will be heading to Arizona State's 40th Annual Sun Angel Classic next weekend, April 5-6, instead of New Mexico's Tailwind Invite.
