DAVIS, Calif. — Following the first event of Saturday afternoon's home finale meet against No. 9 Fresno State the Aggies jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and went on to tie in Hunter Seat, 4-4, but it would not be enough to lift UC Davis past its United Equestrian Conference colleague as the Aggies closed out their 2018-19 home slate with a 4-12 loss to the Bulldogs.Â
The Aggies fell to a 1-4 overall record on the season and a 1-2 UEC mark. The Bulldogs improved to a 4-6 record on the season with a 3-2 league mark. UC Davis and Fresno State will meet for the second half of their home-and-home series on Mar. 30 at the Student Horse Center in Fresno, Calif.Â
UC Davis was first to get on the board on Saturday afternoon at the UC Davis Equestrian Center, earning the first point of the day in Equitation Over Fences after junior
Stephanie Don edged Alex Dirickson, 71-70. Junior
Sabin Marquardt then gave the Aggies a 2-0 advantage after turning in a career-best score to defeat Hailey Livingston, 83-73. Don and Marquardt currently co-lead the Aggies with 3-2 individual records on the season so far. Freshman
Keely Laughlin then capped off the first event for the Aggies with an 81-76 win over Cecily Hayes, helping UC Davis to a 3-1 lead.Â
But the Bulldogs answered back in Equitation on the Flat, erasing the Aggies' lead with a 3-1 effort of their own. Freshman
Laura Wise secured the Aggies' lone point in the event defeating Brooke Nelson, 70-66. Senior
Julia Bernard also logged her first career win in exhibition, defeating Alivia Hart, 78-71.Â
Sophomore
Katie Flinn tallied a career-best score of 72 in horsemanship, while sophomore
Charlize Zuraek, senior
Haley Fredericks, and senior
Olivia Russell tallied season-best marks of 72, 71, and 70, respectively, in Reining. But the Aggies could not close the gap on the Bulldogs, who swept both events, 4-0, en route to a 12-4 win over UC Davis.
Saturday's meet marked the final home appearance for soon-to-be graduates
Julia Bernard (Animal Science), Fredericks (Political Science),
Laurel Jackson (Genetics & Genomics), and
Katrina Macalello (Biological Sciences).Â
The Aggies resume action later this month on Mar. 30 for the second half of their home-and-home series with the Bulldogs at the Student Horse Center in Fresno, Calif. at 11 a.m.
