UC Davis rolls past Radford in LAX slugfest

Cuenin becomes ninth Aggie to amass at least seven goals in a game

DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior midfielder Taylor Cuenin scored a career-high seven goals, junior attacker Amanda Outcalt added three goals and four assists, and senior attacker Sorana Larson chipped in another hat trick, helping UC Davis post an 18-13 win over Radford in collegiate women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 6-5 for the year. The Highlanders slip to 1-6 overall.

Cuenin had four goals in the first half to help the Aggies to a 9-4 lead at the break, then poured in another three in the second period. Outcalt did most her offensive work during a 6-2 run to start the second half, scoring her own goal to start that stretch, then feeding Cuenin twice and Larson once.

Senior Shannon Cross added another two goals and two assists, junior Mar Alvear hit another two goals, while junior midfielder Maddie Myers had one. Meanwhile, Myers and junior Kate Graham combined for 20 of their team's 22 draw controls -- 11 for Graham, nine for Myers.

Sophomore Taylor Mathieson earned her first career starting nod at goalkeeper, responding with eight saves against eight goals allowed. She also had two ground balls and a steal, plus she stopped back-to-back eight-meter attempts in the final minutes of the game.

UC Davis led for the entire contest, with Outcalt and Cuenin scoring back-to-back to ignite a 6-1 start during the first 14 minutes. Radford whittled its way to an 8-4 deficit after Emma Rogers' eight-meter conversion in the 26th minute, but Cuenin delivered a goal with 2:08 left in the half to boost the Aggies to their five-goal advantage at halftime.

The 6-2 outburst in the second half extended the lead to 15-6 by the 43rd minute. Highlander junior Lindsey Carroll had three goals and assist in a late 6-2 run that brought Radford to within a 17-12 deficit before sophomore Anna Hofgard assisted Cross with 3:57 left, ending a brief scoreless drought for the Aggies.

UC Davis outshot its guest by a 35-26 margin and forced seven Radford transition turnovers, including five in the first half.

Outcalt, who entered the week ranked third nationally in assists, raises her season total to 28 and her career sum to 55. The marine & coastal science major from Alamo moved ahead of Meghan Jordan for fourth on the school season list, and in front of Jordan for sixth on UC Davis' career list. Coincidentally, Jordan was among the throng of Aggie lacrosse alumni in attendance for Saturday's game.

Graham's 11 draw controls also represents the most since Elizabeth Landry -- also in attendance Saturday -- had exactly that many at Saint Mary's in the 2015 finale.

Cuenin becomes the ninth player in school history to enjoy a seven-goal game, and the first in almost exactly three years. Katie McMahon had five contests of eight or more goals from 2004-06, Hannah Mirza hit eight vs. Saint Mary's in 2012, Elizabeth Landry had a pair of seven-goal games in 2014 and 2015, Melissa Kellan had seven against Old Dominion in 2014, Elizabeth Datino hit seven at Howard in 2013, Gina Hoffmire had seven-goal performances at Central Connecticut (2011) and Temple (201), Kelly Albin netted seven at Bloomsburg (2004), and Jaime Fitzpatrick hit seven in a neutral-site game against Indiana of Pennsylvania in 2003.

UC Davis takes a break for final exams, then heads to the opposite coast for a spring break road trip at Georgetown (Mar. 24), UMBC (Mar. 27) and Mount St. Mary's (Mar. 30).
