Aggie laxers sink to early deficit in loss to Michigan

Cross, Outcalt score two goals each

DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior Shannon Cross scored two goals with an assist while junior and fellow attacker Amanda Outcalt added another two scores, but UC Davis could not overcome an early onslaught of Wolverine goals, falling to Michigan by a 17-5 in windy and rainy non-conference women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Saturday night.

The Aggies even their record to 1-1. The Wolverines improve to 2-0 for the year.

Outcalt scored both of her goals with in the first 15 minutes of play, while Cross netted her two scores in the second half, but UC Davis faced a 26-8 shooting deficit to fall into a 13-3 hole at halftime. U-M junior midfielder Chandler Kirby had all four of her game-high goals in that early onslaught.

In contrast to the first-half disadvantage, the Aggies both outshot (9-7) and outdrew (5-2) their guests in the second half. Junior middie and team co-captain Kate Graham won four draw controls, while defenders Ally Deremer and Addie Dearden each posted a pair of caused turnovers.

The Wolverines scored six unanswered, including three straight from Kirby's stick, during the heart of the first half to turn a 5-2 edge into an 11-2 advantage. They largely used the running clock in the second half, attempting only the seven shots.

Junior attacker Sorana Larson accounted for the fifth Aggie goal in Saturday's contest. Senior goalkeeper Grace Richards picked up six more saves for the day, giving her 23 for the two-game opening weekend.

UC Davis heads to the Sunshine State next weekend, first at Jacksonville on Friday, then in a neutral-site contest against Mercer the following Sunday.
