Brooke is Big West’s best for second straight week

Yanez earns fifth career weekly honor from the league office

DAVIS, Calif. — For the second straight week and the fifth time in her young career, sophomore communication major Brooke Yanez has been named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week after helping UC Davis to a 5-1 week at its own Aggie Invitational.

One of only three UC Davis pitchers to earn Big West pitcher of the week honors since joining the league in 2008, Yanez's five career awards ties Alex Holmes for the most in the history of the program after Holmes did the same in her four-year career from 2008-11.

The left-hander from Ventura, Calif., finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record and 0.37 ERA, allowing only a single earned run (and only two overall) during 19 innings of work, striking out 29 against only five walks and holding opposing hitters to a .162 average.

She went the distance in all three of her starts — including her first shutout of the year in a 1-0 win over UTEP — and did not allow more than four hits in any of her starts.

In her first appearance of the weekend, Yanez tied a career high with 15 strikeouts against the Miners, allowing an unearned run on four hits in UC Davis'  4-1 victory. Following her three-hit shutout of Seattle on Feb. 22, during which she stuck out six without walking a hitter, Yanez stymied the Redhawks once again, allowing a run on four hits while striking out eight over seven innings in a 3-1 win.

For good measure, Yanez also finished 4-for-9 (.444) at the plate, with a home run and two RBI.

Her 29 strikeouts for the weekend moved her into a tie for fourth on the program's Division I career list with 250, matching Jessica Thweatt's total from 2010-13.

Overall, Yanez enters the week with a 7-1 overall record and a 1.63 ERA, striking out 60 hitters in only 43 innings of work. She ranks tied for ninth in the nation in wins while also ranking among the top 25 in strikeouts (14th) and strikeouts per seven innings (23rd - 9.8).

UC Davis is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday (Feb. 26), heading across the Causeway for the first of two rivalry meetings with Sacramento State at Shea Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
