DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior midfielder Taylor Cuenin and junior attacker Sorana Larson each scored hat tricks for UC Davis, but a first-half Stanford outburst resulted in a 19-10 Cardinal win in collegiate women's lacrosse action at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies move to 2-4 for the year.
Cuenin netted two goals in the first half, including the contest opener, then completed her hat trick in the 44th minute. Larson scored her first goal of the game on an eight-meter in the 11th minute, then hit back-to-back in the second half. Four other UC Davis players scored one goal each, including the first collegiate score from freshman Christie Coulter. Sophomore Mar Alvear led the Aggie defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls to go with three draw controls.
For Stanford, senior Areta Buness, sophomore Ali Baiocco and junior Mikaela Watson each scored three goals.
After surrendering Cuenin's goal in the fourth minute, Stanford answered with four straight to build would ultimately became a 14-4 halftime lead. Buness had all three of her goals before the break. The Cardinal then tacked on two more quick goals in the second to extend their advantage to 16-4.
Larson's second-half scores came as part of a 5-0 UC Davis run from the 48th through 59th minutes, reducing the deficit to 17-10 before Stanford popped two goals in the final 25 seconds of play.
Stanford outdrew its guest by a 20-10 margin and put 25 of its 31 shots on frame. UC Davis managed to cut its turnovers to a season-low 12 and continued to transition the ball well, clearing on 15 of 17 attempts.
UC Davis returns to action at Oregon on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
