SANTA CLARA, Calif. — No. 11 UC Davis women's water polo finished the Santa Clara Invite with wins in both games to improve to 8-8 on the year.
In the midday game against Cal State Monterey Bay, the Aggies topped the Otters 14-7, with hat tricks from Kathleen Schafle and Marcela Portales, and additional goals by Annie Kutt, Emily Byrne, Chloe Robinson, Ariana Momen, Julia Hartmann, Noelle Wijnbelt, Hailey Williams, and Emily Aikema. Lauren Hooyer had a new career high six saves in the second half, and Caitlin Golding added another five to hold the Otters to just seven goals.
To close the day, the Aggies faced host Santa Clara, and narrowly won by a 7-6 result. The Broncos took an early 2-0 lead off goals from Hailey Eberle, setting the tone of the game. The Aggies were not able to come back from this lead until the final minute of regulation, as Santa Clara held the pressure throughout. Only three Aggies found the cage, with Wijnbelt completing her fifth hat trick of the season, and Kutt and Portales adding two each. Golding remained as the goalie for the entire game, and recorded a season-high 11 saves.
UC Davis was down by as many as two goals on three separate occasions: 2-4 at the end of the first half, 3-5 near the end of the third, and 4-6 halfway through the fourth period. With 4:46 to go in the game, the Aggies rallied behind Kutt's second goal, getting the ball to Wijnbelt for two goals within a minute of each other to seal the game in a come-from-behind fashion in favor of UC Davis.
No. 11 UC Davis is back on the road next week, traveling to Cambridge, Mass. for the Harvard Tournament, in which it will play four games.
