Golden Bears hold off Aggies in all-UC lacrosse showdown

UC Davis pulled within a one-goal deficit midway through 2nd

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Junior midfielder Maddie Myers and senior attacker Shannon Cross each performed hat tricks but UC Davis was unable to overcome its first-half deficit, falling by a 16-13 final to California in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Memorial Stadium Friday night.

The Aggies slip to 2-3 for the year. The Golden Bears pick up their first win, moving to 1-4.

Attacker Sorana Larson added two goals and an assist for UC Davis, while Amanda Outcalt contributed three total points on a goal and two assists. Mar Alvear, Taylor Cuenin, Kate Graham, and Natalie Wilson also found the back of the net once apiece.

For Cal, senior attacker Caroline Corzel led all players with four goals, with Eliza Christman and Kirsten Swanson each netting another three.

The Golden Bears scored three straight to start the game en route to a 10-5 lead at the halftime break. However, Larson's goal in the 35th minute ignited a 6-2 overall run, with Outcalt assisting Cuenin and Graham amidst a 4-0 Aggie outburst that cut the Cal lead to just 12-11 by the midpoint of the second half. Larson later assisted Myers in the 50th to keep the margin at a single goal, 13-12.

However, the Golden Bears responded with three straight down the stretch to pull away to a 16-12 lead, with Cross' hat trick goal with 3:36 remaini ending all further scoring in the contest.

Cal outshot its guest by a 30-28 margin and committed just eight turnovers for the game. UC Davis outdrew its host, 17-14, with Alvear winning a career-high nine.

The Aggies return to action at Stanford on Sunday. Game time is 1 p.m. (Please note: previous schedules indicated a 2 p.m. start).
