DAVIS, Calif. – Thanks to his outstanding play throughout both of last week's home games, junior economics major
Joe Mooney was named Big West Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
This is the third time that CSM, a subsidiary of USA Today Sports, named an Aggie as its Player of the Week; senior communication major
TJ Shorts II earned this accolade when the outlet announced its award winner on Feb. 4 and 11.
All three awards coincide with UC Davis' current five-game win streak, which stretches throughout the entire month of February.
For the week, Mooney shot .632 overall, .500 from three and averaged 16.0 ppg.
Since league play opened, Mooney has become one of the top Big West players, and the numbers prove it. Entering Thursday's game at Cal State Fullerton, the third-year guard leads the conference with his free throw percentage (.955), is ranked No. 2 in three-point percentage (.492) and three-point field goals made (3.0/gm.), No. 8 in scoring (15.5 ppg) and No. 9 in field goal percentage (.542).
It was Mooney's 8 of 11 shooting overall, and 5 of 7 from three, that turned a five-point deficit into an Aggie lead the team held for good when CSUN visited the Pavilion last Thursday. By posting his second career 20-point game, thanks to a team-high 21 points, UC Davis extended its win streak against the Matadors to 11 games.
By scoring double figures for the fifth game in a row when the Aggies hosted Long Beach State last weekend, UC Davis earned its fifth victory in a row and its fourth in the last five played versus the 49ers.
Following Thursday's game, UC Davis will head to CSUN for Saturday's ESPN3 broadcast — its final league road game.
Starting with their Feb. 28 home matchup vs. UC Irvine, televised across the nation on ESPNU (free admission for students) the Aggies' final four games of the regular season will take place inside the Pavilion.
AGGIE EVO
Established during the 2017-18 academic year, the Aggie EVO System is UC Davis Athletics' investment in the primary mission of preparing student-athletes for a successful "launch" after graduation.
Thanks to a collaboration of alumni, university resources, corporate partners, coaches and Student-Athlete Outcomes staff, all Aggies are guided over four years to acquire the skills, knowledge, opportunities and tools to better know and navigate the "World of Work" after graduating from UC Davis.
