DAVIS, Calif. — The Aggies will head south to start Big West Conference play with a three-match road swing, facing UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, and CSUN over the President's Day weekend.
Coming off their first dual win of the season over Pacific, UC Davis women's tennis will get a chance to pull ahead with a winning record with a sweep of all three matches.
AWARE OF THE ANTEATERS
Following a 10-15 season last year, UC Irvine has only played dual matches in the 2018-19 year, and not competed in any fall tournaments. The Anteaters hold a 7-2 record going into Friday's match against Hawaii for their first dual since a Nov. 2 exhibition against Cal State LA. On a roster of 13, six players carry undefeated records, including freshmen Alyssia Fossorier and Jessica Tsukiji, who are both 4-0. In doubles, UCI has lost just five individual matches, and has a winning percentage of .808. Their top three teams include Flora Amiri and Arianna Tilbury, Danielle Garrido and Gillian Parker, and Fossorier and Dana Mackensen, who all have a 4-0 record at various positions in the lineup.
TACKLING THE TITANS
Cal State Fullerton has enjoyed a dominant last three seasons, setting school records in total number of dual wins with a program-best 20-6 record in the 2017-18 season. This year, the Titans have a 2-2 record heading into Sunday's matchup, recording losses to Arizona State and San Diego State. The reigning Big West Freshman of the Year, Genevieve Zeidan, has yet to play a dual match, and holds a 2-6 record after fall play. Sophomore Jadie Acidera is the lone Titan to have an unblemished record, winning all three of her matches at the No. 6 singles spot. Cal State Fullerton has featured six different doubles pairings, all with varied success.
MEETING THE MATADORS
CSUN has proven to be a challenge for the Aggies the last several seasons, winning three out of the last five matchups. The Matadors carry a 3-1, 0-1 Big West record into Friday's match against Long Beach State. Their lone loss of the season came to defending Big West Tournament champions Hawaii, in a 4-3 loss in Hawaii. Three Matadors have a 4-0 singles streak to open the season, playing at various lineup positions, including Ana Fraile Toboso, Skyla Alcon, and Sibel Demirbaga. Senior Monika Van de Vondel will be back in action after a January injury that kept her out of a match. CSUN is also 9-2 in doubles so far this season.
