Aggies hang tough in Minnesota behind Bessolo's 17

Senior sets season high as UC Davis makes a run in the final minute

Box Score MINNEAPOLIS — UC Davis trimmed a 15-point third-quarter deficit down to just four points in the final minute, holding host Minnesota to no field goals in the final four minutes of the contest, but the Golden Gophers won it at the line, sinking 26-of-31 for the game en route to a 76-67 victory over the Aggies on Sunday afternoon at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Aggies fell to 4-6 overall, taking the host side to the limit by shooting 50 percent in the second half from the floor and draining 11 three-pointers for the game — four of those off the hand of Nina Bessolo.

Minnesota, which was receiving votes in both the Associated Press and coaches polls entering the week, improved to 9-1 overall, led by 24 points from Gadiva Hubbard.

Bessolo finished 6-of-13 from the field and added three rebounds en route to her 17 points, setting a new season-high, eclipsing the bar set twice this year, the last coming at Northern Arizona last weekend. Senior Katie Toole added 12 points on 5-of-8 from the floor, while junior Cierra Hall added 10 rebounds and four assists, leading the team in both categories.

UC Davis also received contributions from up-and-down its lineup, as 10 players finished with at least two points and had its bench outscore their counterparts, 38-11, for the game, including career highs from Makaila Sanders (eight) and Campbell Gray (seven).

In all, the Aggies shot 42 percent to just 38 by the Golden Gophers -- including just a 31-percent clip by Minnesota in the second half and a 23 percent mark in the fourth.

Trailing by 12 points with 3:51 remaining in the game, the Aggies found their final kick, getting three pointers by Sophia Song and Sanders around two Minnesota free throws to make it an eight-point game, and another trey by Sanders brought UC Davis to within six points with :46 remaining as the Aggies called timeout.

The Aggies then forced a turnover off Minnesota's inbound attempt, and Sanders found room to drive the line down the right side, sinking the bucket to make it 71-67 with just over 31 seconds to play.

That would be as close as UC Davis would get, however, taking its chances with Minnesota at the line and the Golden Gophers did not falter, making 5-of-6 from the stripe in the final 30 seconds to secure the victory.

UC Davis returns to the court on Thursday (Dec. 19) at 2 p.m., taking on Pepperdine at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif., in their final game before the holiday.
