SAN DIEGO — Joe Mooney finished with a game-high 14 points in Saturday's non-conference game at Jenny Craig Pavilion, Matt Neufeld hit 5 of 7 shots to finish with 10 points, and Elijah Pepper tied a career-high by finishing with 10 rebounds at San Diego.

Back-to-back late threes ultimately led to an eight-point lead late in the game for the Toreros, which was trimmed to three points with 36 seconds remaining thanks to free throws from Damion Squire and Kennedy Koehler. After San Diego's Joey Calcaterra bumped that lead to five by hitting a pair at the line, Koehler hit another free throw, which was followed by another pair of shots at the stripe by Calcaterra which extended his team's advantage to six.

In addition to leading all Aggies with 10 boards, Pepper hit a near-corner three to chop USD's lead in half with 16 seconds to play, but Calcaterra sealed the result by connecting on 1 of 2 free throws, with six seconds remaining, to help San Diego edge the Aggies, 58-54.

UC Davis will now face a quick turnaround because it will return to action Monday night when it hosts Loyola Marymount in the final home game of 2019. Tipoff inside the Pavilion will take place at 7 p.m. With Saturday's result, the Aggies will return to Davis with a 4-8 record while San Diego improves to 6-7.

Until the Toreros' late three-point flurry, they were clearly frustrated by UC Davis' defense since it held USD scoreless for five minutes, four minutes, and three-plus minute block of action throughout Saturday's road matchup.

It was a 14-3 run before halftime that gave UC Davis their first sizable lead of the game; it led by two early before San Diego grabbed the lead for most of the first half until the Aggies' pre-break scoring run.

UC Davis held the lead at the break, and for a majority of the second half until the Toreros' pair of threes ultimately led to their largest lead of the game, at eight points, with 2:37 remaining.

For the rest of the night, each team took turns making their free throws, until Pepper's clutch shot pulled the Aggies within a one-possession margin, and forced San Diego to sink its free throws to withstand an Aggie rally.

With that three, Pepper finished with nine points, one shy of recording UC Davis' first double-double of the season.
