DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis women's tennis will be bolstered next year with the additions of Carly Schwartzberg and Michelle Zell to the 2020-21 roster, as the duo signed National Letters of Intent (NLI), announced by head coach Bill Maze.
Schwartzberg, a four-star recruit out of San Diego according to TennisRecruiting.Net, has reached a career-high national ranking of No. 113 in her class in October of this year. Competing primarily in the junior USTA circuit, Schwartzberg recently reached the finals of the girl's 18 doubles draw at the Level 1 117th Annual USTA SoCal Junior Sectional Championships in June this year, and is currently ranked No. 3 in the Southern California USTA section in doubles, and No. 20 in singles.
The San Diego native competed one year for Scripps Ranch High School, finishing her freshman year with a 31-5 record to win the Eastern League singles title. Schwartzberg went on to earn team MVP and Eastern League Athlete of the Year accolades for her performance.
Joining Schwartzberg, Zell is also a four-star recruit, hailing from Tustin, Calif. Zell has put up a 35-18 record, with a dominant 15-8 record over fellow four-stars according to TennisRecruiting.net. Competing three years for Foothill High School's girl's tennis team, Zell led the Knights to two Crestview League team titles, and finished her high school career as a two-time league MVP, and reached the individual league final all three years, claiming two championship crowns.
On a national scale, Zell is No. 87 in the country in her recruiting class, and No. 16 in California, earning a spot on the Hot 100 list in March of 2018 (TennisRecruiting.net).
"We are very excited that Carly and Michelle have committed to UC Davis," said Maze.
"They are excellent students and excellent athletes who will make immediate impacts to the university and to our team. We can't wait to welcome them to campus next fall!"
