Game Notes:
UC Davis |
Sacramento State
DAVIS, Calif. - For the fourth season in a row, UC Davis and Sacramento State will square off inside the Golden 1 Center, in Wednesday's 5:30 p.m. rivalry matchup. Even though this is a neutral-site game, UC Davis is the designated home team.
The Aggies won the first-ever college basketball game played on the Sacramento Kings' home court (66-61 on 11/21/16), and the following year's contest (64-47 on 11/21/17) before the Hornets earned their first win last season (58-55 on 11/20/18).
Prior to last season's result, the Aggies won three in a row and four of the last six played against Sacramento State.
If previously played rivalry games during the
Jim Les era offer any indication, expect an exciting and close game. In addition to splitting the last eight head-to-head matchups against the Hornets, four of the last six games were decided by six points or fewer.
As is the case with Sacramento State, UC Davis' roster is led by four seniors. However, this year's Hornets squad includes 10 upperclassmen (five seniors and juniors), four sophomores and three freshmen. By comparison, the Aggies are a younger team with five true freshmen, two redshirt freshmen, three sophomores, one junior and a senior class comprised of fifth-year student-athletes.
Even though the Aggies are young, they play like seasoned veterans: First-year guard
Ezra Manjon's last-second layup lifted UC Davis to its last victory. In Sunday's tournament finale, Manjon's free throw forced overtime, and freshman guard
Elijah Pepper's near-corner three tied the game and forced double OT. Pepper also finished with a team-high 10 rebounds.
UC Davis played more games in last week's Red Wolves Classic (3), the team's only tournament of the season, than the Hornets have this year (2). Both of the Hornets' games took place at home, and ended with a victory versus Simpson and UC Riverside.
Series Record: UC Davis trails 67-50
Last Sacramento State Win: 11/20/18 — N, 58-55
Last UC Davis Win: 11/21/17 — N, 64-47
Series Streak: Sacramento State +1
