SAMMAMISH, Wash. — With Mother Nature threatening to wash out day one of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Tuesday, the UC Davis women's golf team dodged enough raindrops and held off the rest of the 11-team field for a day one lead at Sahalee Country Club.
Originally scheduled for 36 holes on Tuesday, the tournament has now been shortened to just two rounds, with the final 18 holes scheduled for Wednesday.
Led by four players in the top 15, the Aggies finished the day with a 9-over 297, holding a seven-shot lead over host Washington and an eight-shot advantage over Rutgers and Sacramento State.
Senior
Rei Nakatani, the reigning Big West Conference Golfer of the Month for September who has finished among the top 25 in all three of the team's fall events thus far, shares the tournament lead after shooting an even-par 72 in damp conditions. It was her sixth round at par or better this season.
She finished with four birdies on the day, including one on the par-four 16th that brought her into a tie for the lead.
Meanwhile, freshman
Jackie Lucena and junior
Madison Wood weren't far behind, shooting rounds of 74 and 75, respectively to finish among the top 10. Lucena's 74 is her second-lowest round this season, placing her in a four-way tie for third, while Wood's 75 has her tied for seventh.
Senior
Christine Danielsson is also among the top 15, standing in an eight-way tie for 14th following her first-round 76, while senior
Yoonhee Kim rounds out the UC Davis contingent in a tie for 39th.
UC Davis was 11 shots better on par fours on Tuesday — including Nakatani, who leads the field at 1-under on par fours and is tied for the top spot with four birdies — and rank second among the tournament field in both pars (55) and birdies (11) made.
