DAVIS, Calif. – Of the four games taking place during the first days of league play, all eyes are on the matchup taking place Thursday night, and not because that is the only action taking place that evening. In a contest aired across the nation on ESPN3, the defending Big West champions will head to the Bren Events Center to face UC Irvine in each team's league opener.

The Aggies and Anteaters, winners of the last two regular season titles, are responsible for the most competitive and entertaining Big West games in recent seasons, which is why league officials wasted no time in pitting these teams against one another once BWC play opens.

Even though UCI leads the all-time series, 23-18, the Aggies won four of the last five games, including last March's double-overtime thriller. In UC Davis' last trip to Irvine, which took place on Mach 3, it erased a five-point deficit with 51 seconds remaining in overtime, to tie the score at 79 and add another five minutes to the scoreboard.

In double OT, the Aggies outscored the Anteaters, 11-5, to collect its third league title in four years, clinch another postseason appearance and No. 1 seed in that season's Big West Tournament. This marked the second time, in as many seasons, that the Bren Events Center hosted a winner-take-all situation between the league's top two teams in the final game of the regular season.

Starting with a 50-47 victory in the championship game of the 2017 Big West Tournament, which punched UC Davis' first-ever ticket to the Big Dance,  it won the last three games versus UCI.

Calling the action courtside for ESPN3's national broadcast, the first of two ESPN3 games featuring UC Davis this week, are Tim Becwar (PBP), Dave Miller (Analyst) and Megan Reza (Sideline). Aggie basketball fans can watch the action live on ESPN3.com, WatchESPN.com, on a mobile device through the ESPN or WatchESPN apps.

A radio broadcast, featuring Scott Marsh's call, is available on 1380 AM KTKZ and the station's TuneIn channel by searching the phrase KTKZ.

This season's return game will take place on Feb. 28, when UCI visits the Pavilion in the first of a season-ending four-game homestand for the Aggies.

Series Record: UC Davis trails 23-18
Last UC Davis Win: 3/3/18 - A, 90-84 (2OT)
Last UC Irvine Win: 3/4/17 - A, 79-49
Series Streak: UC Davis +3
