DAVIS, Calif. — Former UC Davis men's soccer standout
Onah Power has inked a one-year professional deal with USL side Reno 1868 FC, the club announced on Monday afternoon.
Power, a 2018 graduate with a degree in economics, will join a Reno side that has been on fire as of late, going unbeaten over a span of three months (16 matches, and a total of 105 days) before falling in the waining minutes to Saint Louis FC on July 28. The club finished 10-0-6 during its unbeaten run and currently stands fifth in the Western Conference, three points clear of San Antonio FC and three points back of Sacramento Republic FC.
"I'm really excited to sign with Reno 1868 FC," Power told the club. "It's my first contract and I really thank the team and Coach Ian (Russell) for giving me the opportunity to play. I'm just looking to improve over the next few years."
The Oakland, Calif., native could make his professional debut as soon as Wednesday (Aug. 8) when Reno travels to Salt Lake City to take on the Real Monarchs SLC. He adds to a defense that has produced six shutouts and allowed just 24 goals in 2018.
"Onah is a player who plays a defensive midfield role," Reno head coach Ian Russell said in a press release announcing the signing on Monday. "He covers a lot of ground, he's very athletic and it'll be good to see how he develops in the next couple of years."
A two-year letter winner for the Aggies from 2016-17, Power started 30 of his 39 career appearances at UC Davis, finishing with a goal and four assists on eight shots in his career. As a senior, Power was an All-Big West Conference first team selection and the league's defensive player of the week on Oct. 30, starting 20 of the team's 21 matches.
He scored the game-winner in a 3-1 win over San Francisco, added two assists in a 5-0 win at UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 21, and tallied a third assist against Sacramento State on Oct. 29. His first career point came on an assist on the game-winning score against UC Santa Barbara as a junior in 2016.
At the end of the 2017 season, Power was also recognized as one of the Big West's top players, ranked No. 10 in the league by Top Drawer Soccer — one of five Aggies total to make the list.
UC Davis opens its 2018 campaign with a pair of exhibitions on Aug. 16 against Pacific at 5 p.m., and Aug. 19 against Chico State at 1 p.m., at Aggie Soccer Field. The Aggies then officially open the season on the road with two matches in the state of Nebraska, taking on Omaha (Aug. 24) and Creighton (Aug. 26).
