INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — The UC Davis men's tennis team's first-round win over UC Riverside's team on the first day of the Big West Conference Championships; however, on the following day in the semifinals, No. 2 Cal Poly prevented UC Davis from advancing to the championship round with a 4-0 shutout at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Friday afternoon.
The Mustang powerhouse sealed the doubles point early on, thanks to their performances at the No. 2 and No. 3 position, to give them the 1-0 lead entering into the singles portion of the dual.
The opposing team continued to outshine the Aggies as they maintained their winning streak until they reached the four-point mark before UC Davis found their opportunity to prevent a shutout. Not only did Cal Poly claim the team victory and their berth into the championship match, which will feature No. 1 UC Santa Barbara, but they also added another win to their undefeated record against the Aggies in Big West Tournament play.
UC Davis concludes their Big West Conference tournament run with a 1-1 record, and their 2017-2018 season with a 9-18 overall record, while the Mustangs improve to 18-6.
This semifinal match also marked the final appearances for Tommy Lam and Everett Maltby, the two graduating seniors who have competed regularly at No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles and No. 1 doubles and No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, throughout this season.
The Aggies were led in singles play by freshman Ivan Thamma, who finished his UC Davis debut with a 14-9 overall record at the No. 1 position, while duos Thamma and Maltby, playing at No. 1 doubles, and Lam and David Goulak, playing at No. 2 doubles, were first and second in most wins with 16 and 13, resepctively.
