Savkin's Run At Mountain West Fall Championships Ends

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Ivan Savkin's run at the Mountain West Fall Championships presented by Palm Casino Resort came to an end Saturday when the seventh-seeded Aggie was defeated (6-3, 6-4) in a semifinal by sixth-seeded Andres Loizas of Grand Canyon.

"Ivan had a really good run this week and has played really well all fall," head coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "His growth and maturity are a great example for the entire group."

Savkin and Loizas stayed on serve in the opening set until Loizas broke Savkin in the eighth game and then closed out the set by winning his own service game.

In the second set, Loizas used a pair of service breaks to go ahead, 5-1, before Savkin won three straight games including a break to get to 5-4 before Loizas closed out the set by holding his own service for the 6-4 win.

Loizas will face unseeded Alberto Perez of New Mexico in Sunday's final after Perez knocked off top-seeded Marko Maksimovic of UNLV in three sets in Saturday's other semifinal (7-5, 0-6, 6-2).

Additional information about the event can be found by visiting the Mountain West Championships Central.

The singles and doubles champions from the five-day Mountain West Fall Championships that conclude Sunday will represent the league at the ITA Conference Masters Championships Nov. 5-8 in Rome, Georgia.

UC Davis will close out its home schedule Oct. 30 - Nov. 1 at the Pacific Invite.
